Hello there,
In my previous position working in a large corporate enviroment (20 000+ users) we had an application installer with all the software on a network drive packaged as EXE's. There were quite a number of build recipes and most of them were already pretty much complete wrt to their designated area. In some extreme cases we had to image a PC with a standard build and 'manually' install the required (rather extensive) list of software to avoid certain conflicts but this was relatively painless as all one had to do was select the applications from the application installer and away it went, completely automated with all performing post configurations as well.
In my new job it seems as if things are quite antiquated at present. I seem to have stepped in at point where there is only one build available and there are countless varieties required within the organisation which means many hours 'wasted' having to manually install all the required software packages not to mention the taking care of the post configuration as well.
I would like to investigate and learn a little more about mutliple application installers. As mentioned above the one in my previous enviroment was called a SOE Application Installer. Also another one that I am aware of is the one used by Windows XP Black Edition. I have no idea what that one's name is. I have not been able to find much information on either of them.
If someone could please shed a little light on the subject or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.
