Big Uber Eats stolen delivery problem in South Africa

Numerous South Africans have complained about Uber Eats drivers stealing their orders after a recent X/Twitter post went viral.

On 19 June 2024, Kwandokuhle Njoli posted a video of security camera footage that appeared to show an Uber Eats driver stealing her order after attempting a delivery in her residential complex.

At least my Ring Doorbell would catch the entire action on video...

I'm surprised people are still using Uber eats. It's gone from being a worthwhile convenience fee to total rip off. All in (item mark up, delivery fees, tip) it's like double the price of just fetching the items yourself. No thanks.

We've cut down drastically, I started ordering online or phoning in, and then collecting myself - as you say, it's 60% of the cost of a delivery without all the drama e.g. cold food, driver error etc.

Yeah where is the rest of the video showing how long the driver stood there before he decided to leave and after he left how long she took to come out?
I see this in the estate daily. They phone you at gate when driver is there. But people do not come out to their driveways and leave the drivers standing there for 5-20min.
Bunch of entitled idiots that think the whole world must wait for them.
Hope the driver enjoyed his pizza to cover his costs.

Welcome to the gig economy: Uber drivers trying to pick me up from the wing location.

The worst is Airbnb hosts who send only partial addresses before check in. Then being slow to respond to my messages in the app. It's a foreign country where my phone is roaming. It's getting late so if they can't host me an hotel will be seriously expensive.

Still worth it.

This. Since the R50 or 75% off vouchers dried up it's not worthwhile anymore. Jacked up food prices, service charge, delivery charge and then the driver wants a tip as well. Lol no thanks.

So finally this has come to light. Stopped using Uber Eats in 2022 already because of this very problem.

Probably not able to come out to the driveway due to all the pizza.

Stopped using food delivery a while ago when I saw it was no longer worthwhile. It's just slow and expensive now.

only used uber eats few times cause of discounts

normally with discounts i used to go to the store

literally place the order outside and ask the teller to call the driver and tell him im here to fetch the order

that way he gets his cut and i get my discount and there isnt any cold food

but they prices are madness and on top of that you have to deal with food you might not want cause wrong orders, cold food and missing stuff

Why? The discounts are still applicable if you order for collection.

I keep getting mails from them offering 50% to 80% off on my next order.

I only used it once on nightshift at work. Took an hour to deliver an order from a place less than 10km away.

LOL - but then why not use the collect option ?? and save on the driver fee

I don't use delivery services anymore unless I order from Rebels Pizza, too far to drive and they charge R15 delivery.

We have Fatcake City here and a Normal fish and chips place less than 2KM away. I call the store and place my order and tell them I will collect in 20 minutes. Never been let down or had to wait for food.

Happened to me also a while back, luckily we have CCTV footage where he "dropped off" the package (with photo to confirm he delivered) and then immediately took the package again with him. Didn't see all the camera's, hilarious!
