Mumps is going around my kids school. Several kids have been booked off for 5 days each.

My 7 (and a half) year old has now started complaining about a sore neck and wants to stay home. I remember when my friend and I had mumps as a kid it was unbearable pain but my kiddo seems to be in great spirits and not showing any discomfort.

She was inoculated as a baby so could this be making it a mild case?

We've seen the doc and spoken to pharmacists who reckon there is nothing you can do expect give painkillers and wait it out. My daughter is not even asking for pain killers.

Have you or your kids had mumps and how bad was the pain?

Maybe she is just complaining to stay at home.

When lice was going around when I was in grade 1, we put eraser dust in our hair in an attempt to go home... :D

Hmmm... well, some times inoculation does = never getting it.

However, I've had Mumps, and it was score, couldn't swallow anything, but it wasn't unbearable...

Just let your kiddo stay at home today and tomorrow... then monitor him, check if there's s fever. If he does have mumps, then on Monday take him to the doctor, and the doctor will his him something for the throat and maybe something for the fever (if there is a fever). I suggest sleep, and a mixture of honey, lemon and hot water (it's not as tasty as coke, but it's much better then feeding your kid medlemon (which has aspirin)).

2 table spoons Honey,
3 table spoon lemon Juice
the rest, hot water (boiled).

I would say add Cayenne Pepper, but that would be too much to ask for (the Cayenne Pepper helps with the pain, gives you more Vit C, and makes this taste like crap, but it really works with sore throats!)

I'd be very interested to know if the children who are getting it have not been innoculated.

Nothing wrong with aspirin. It's something you'd want if you have a fever. And how much vitamin C is there in cayenne pepper?

You shouldn't take aspirin if you're under 18. I had it after being innoculated, it wasn't fun but it wasn't unbearably painful either, just a lot of swelling.

Of the 3 in her class all have/had been inoculated.

@Scotty777 - thanks for the honey and lemon idea.

I csn't remember but is it mumps that you need to stay in a dark room for or you can damage your eyes?

There isn't "lots" of vitamin C in cayenne paper, but since it's basically a chilly, it helps with pain because is your throat is itchy, it kinda scratches it for you. and the "hot stuff" in the chilly desensitizes you a little so it's not that sore... but you must drink it hot (temperature).

Pleasure :), lemon for vit c, and the honey has anti bacterial properties (stopping secondary infections), and also it a good source of energy for the body. I was sick as a dog on my first Prelim exam, and I started drinking that, after about 3 days, I felt a lot better, and my nose started clearing up (apparently I caught swine flu ).

I think that's pink eye.

It's not recommended for under 16s because it carries a very small risk. Giving high doses of vitamin C can also be dangerous to young children with a fever.

Yes, and so is giving high doses of water because it dilutes the salts in your body, and then your nerves aren't able to send messages across, and you have seizures and stuff

And Lemon has Vit C, but we aren't talking massive doses here...

And the side effect for vit c over dose are like dizziness, and the squirts
