Johannesburg - The SA Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) will embark on a strike in Gauteng on Friday in solidarity with striking public servants, a spokesperson said.

"The 52 000 members of Samwu in Gauteng would be going on the solidarity strike on Friday," said spokesperson Tahir Sema.

"Samwu's membership in other provinces are in the process of discussing pledging solidarity."

The union would inform municipalities across the province on Wednesday of its plans to strike.

Sema said there was no need for the union to give the employer seven days' notice, because there was no wage dispute between Samwu and the employer.

"But we will be informing them of the strike action."

The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) called for a solidarity strike on Tuesday to try and get the government to accede to public servants' demand for an 8.6% wage increase and R1 000 a month housing allowance. The government is offering a 7% increase and a R700 allowance.

there goes my bus :mad::mad:

Why the hell would a worked who has NO wage dispute with their employer decide to strike and lose money in "solidarity" with a different group of workers...

The logic boggles my bloody mind.

Fire the lot of them... the lazy idiots. They have already had their "extended holiday" this year.

At least I can give them crap again in December when they come for their "Christmas Box" ... I love telling them where they can get off.

It seems that this Municipal workers are permanently on strike. They will support any cause just for the chance to strike. Solders of furtune?

This is how the apartheid government was overthrown. Brothers and sisters suffering in solidarity.

and u are a stupid idiot, they are earning peanuts and only way to get more is to go on strike.

For example Government was prepared to spend R40 billion on military aircraft acquisition and now they are not prepared to spend R2 billion on teachers!

Speak not with your hand stuck in your us!

After the published teachers salaries in the weekend press I think that they need a 20% salary cut !

But I agree with the military aircraft comment - however that was done to oil the Gravy Train !!!

TIA, we demand.

It's not like they have it hard with their 6 hour working days anyway. I think that if they want an increase, then it should be ramped up to a full 8-5 working day in exchange.
