Musica shuts down

Retail group Clicks has announced it will shut down its entertainment brand Musica in South Africa on 31 May 2021.

Musica has closed 19 stores since the start of the 2021 financial year and is currently trading from 59 outlets.

The remaining stores will be closed as leases expire over the next four months, when the majority of leases terminate.

Done

Sad day indeed for the employees, not only did piracy hit this market. Although, they did try and diversify their product range, but in the end they succumbed to the pandemic. They missed the opportunity to engage with customers with a strong online presence, which is the downfall of many a business...there is the need to constantly evolve.

This was always going to happen; just a few years behind international trends of major "specialist" retailers shutting down. Too niche and with the move to digital and online for those who still yearn for physical items, the writing has been on the wall for some time.

I always considered the irrelevance of Musica when walking by their mostly empty stores. i guess it was inevitable.

Never really bought stuff from them, but they are a household brand, so it's kinda sad to hear. Best of luck to those impacted by this.

Sad to see this happening, but it was bound to happen in the end. One great thing about this is hearing that the staff arent just being let go, but are being absorbed into the clicks franchise.

Thats really awesome to see! Well done Clicks, Well done

RIP in peace Musica. You will be missed.

Won't miss it. Sad to say.
They didn't hit the mark. Potential but I don't think they had their ear to the ground.

End of an era (although I think it ended long ago for all practical purposes.)

I worked there as a youth. Musica was a haven for alternative kids just leaving high school. They even had standards back in those days, you had to have a decent knowledge of at least two genres, pop was non-negosh unless you knew your classical music then you could pass with a working knowledge of classic rock and some classical/world music.

There was a good mix of white, Coloured and black kids (you had to have people with hip-hop, R&B and kwaito knowledge too) and I think for some it was the first real friendships that crossed racial lines.

I had some great times with that crowd, tons of nostalgia as I type this. TBH it really wasn't that far from an Empire Records type scene. Nice memories to look back on.

This sucks, they got into my good spot when they started importing Google Products.

If I was them, I would rebrand (move away from Music and more into entertainment and automation) and then bring in Google, Sonoff, Shelby etc home automation to the general public since they have the footprint.

Bought earphones from them a couple of times. They were usually cheaper than Game and IC. RIP
