Musica shuts down

Should have listened to Radioshack, at least they managed to get an e-commerce presence going.

Like video shops they are no longer relevant, but still sad to see another famous retailer bite the dust :(

This sucks, they got into my good spot when they started importing Google Products.

If I was them, I would rebrand (move away from Music and more into entertainment and automation) and then bring in Google, Sonoff, Shelby etc home automation to the general public since they have the footprint.
The home entertainment would’ve been a good progression. Might’ve even moved to an online only store too.

On the plus side. I hope landlords kaak off!

My CDs are in a box, sitting in the garage cupboard.

Sad to see this happening, but it was bound to happen in the end. One great thing about this is hearing that the staff arent just being let go, but are being absorbed into the clicks franchise.

Thats really awesome to see! Well done Clicks, Well done

It doesn't state they will continue to do that, though, only that they have been doing it for the stores closed since September 202.

"In the stores which have been closed since September 2020, the Musica staff have been absorbed into the Clicks Group’s expanding health and beauty store network."

It'd likely be very difficult to absorb staff from all 59 stores into the CLicks group, tbh.

Musica shuts down

Retail group Clicks has announced it will shut down its entertainment brand Musica in South Africa on 31 May 2021.

Musica has closed 19 stores since the start of the 2021 financial year and is currently trading from 59 outlets.

The remaining stores will be closed as leases expire over the next four months, when the majority of leases terminate.
sweet. when is the sale?

Sad day indeed for the employees, not only did piracy hit this market. Although, they did try and diversify their product range, but in the end they succumbed to the pandemic. They missed the opportunity to engage with customers with a strong online presence, which is the downfall of many a business...there is the need to constantly evolve.

Piracy (specifically online) did impact it, but I don't think that's what lead to the closing down of Musica and other brick-and-mortar media stores. The thing is for most people (less tech savy) it's still rather 'difficult' to download pirated content, eg torrenting, usenet, etc.

The big hit was when cheap, legal, subscription services that's extremely convenient and easy to use entered the market, eg Spotify, Netflix etc.
That is what made it hard for these guys to keep up.

They had the financials and connections to create their own Spotify service that could have built up a brand and presence in SA before Spotify went global and yet they chose to stick with the brick and mortar until it died. Missed opportunity.

And then you have Takealot mopping up the rest of the market that still want to buy CDs.

I remember the days when I was going to Musica in my hometown to buy computer games.

GOG, Steam and others made entertainment content easier to access by the day.
RIP Musica, you will be missed dearly.

The musica in my hometown was the source of many local South African entertainment content...
Looking a for a Afrikaans movie? Go to Musica.

Will they have a major sale, similar to the CNA sale back in 2020?

Still can't compete. Simfy Africa is still limping along for some reason.

Simfy got in early and created their own presence before another more international player could come along. You'll find that they are probably still making a fair amount of money and for someone at the top, that's ok with them.

I agree that they can't compete now, but if you get in early and created your own presence then they would be able to leverage those that are too lazy/unwilling to change up providers.
