Should have listened to Radioshack, at least they managed to get an e-commerce presence going.
The home entertainment would’ve been a good progression. Might’ve even moved to an online only store too. This sucks, they got into my good spot when they started importing Google Products.
If I was them, I would rebrand (move away from Music and more into entertainment and automation) and then bring in Google, Sonoff, Shelby etc home automation to the general public since they have the footprint.
Sad to see this happening, but it was bound to happen in the end. One great thing about this is hearing that the staff arent just being let go, but are being absorbed into the clicks franchise.
Thats really awesome to see! Well done Clicks, Well done
Their bluetooth earphones was cheap.Always insanely high prices and crap deals. Not surprised.
sweet. when is the sale?Musica shuts down
Retail group Clicks has announced it will shut down its entertainment brand Musica in South Africa on 31 May 2021.
Musica has closed 19 stores since the start of the 2021 financial year and is currently trading from 59 outlets.
The remaining stores will be closed as leases expire over the next four months, when the majority of leases terminate.
Sad day indeed for the employees, not only did piracy hit this market. Although, they did try and diversify their product range, but in the end they succumbed to the pandemic. They missed the opportunity to engage with customers with a strong online presence, which is the downfall of many a business...there is the need to constantly evolve.
And then you have Takealot mopping up the rest of the market that still want to buy CDs.Piracy (specifically online) did impact it, but I don't think that's what lead to the closing down of Musica and other brick-and-mortar media stores. The thing is for most people (less tech savy) it's still rather 'difficult' to download pirated content, eg torrenting, usenet, etc.
The big hit was when cheap, legal, subscription services that's extremely convenient and easy to use entered the market, eg Spotify, Netflix etc.
That is what made it hard for these guys to keep up.
Still can't compete. Simfy Africa is still limping along for some reason. They had the financials and connections to create their own Spotify service that could have built up a brand and presence in SA before Spotify went global and yet they chose to stick with the brick and mortar until it died. Missed opportunity.
