Musica shuts down

Clicks, Musica, The Body Shop, GNC and Claire’s are market-leading brands and have a combined footprint of over 880 stores, including 51 in the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho.

  • Clicks is South Africa’s leading health and beauty retailer, offering value for money in convenient and appealing locations. Clicks has the largest retail pharmacy chain with over 580 in-store pharmacies.
  • The Body Shop sells natural, ethically-produced beauty products and has been operated under a franchise agreement with The Body Shop International since 2001.
  • GNC is the largest global specialty health and wellness retailer, and has been operated under an exclusive franchise agreement for southern Africa since 2014.
  • Claire's is one of the world’s leading specialty retailers of fashionable jewellery and accessories for young women and girls, and has been operated under an exclusive franchise agreement for southern Africa since 2015.
  • Musica is the country’s leading entertainment retail brand and was acquired in 1992.
  • UPD is South Africa’s leading full-range pharmaceutical wholesaler and the only one with a national presence.
Yeah looks like more shutdowns are on the cards.

That was worth it.. though i reckon they likely made a lot of losses in the recent decade or less because they didn't end or evolve it fast enough.
 
I never really liked Musica as they were far too "poppy" for my taste.

But I do miss the Hillbrow Record Centre!
 
Always horribly expensive and super limited in genres was Musica. The teeny indy shops that used to be around were way more awesome to spend time in. I still buy cd's, just these days it's more and more from the artists themselves :)
 
its sad , I used to enjoy flipping through CD`s then picking one up and reading the back to see what cool songs were on it .

Was about to say the same, especially during 90s and 00s. I found it quiet therapeutic to pop in after varsity or on weekend and check out new releases or try sniff out some hard to find albums.

Unfortunately the popular music changed and so did Musica's focus. Oh well!

I still buy CDs of bands I like. Got quite the collection. Besides, my car doesn't have the ability to hook up my iPod, so CDs do the trick.
 
Anyone been to a musica yet, I hear they having a 3 for 2 sale
 
:crying: Sad to see these places go. Is Look&Listen still around? I know they offered MP3 downloads. Going digital is the only way these physical stores can survive, especially in a country such as ours where bandwidth is treated like an expensive scarce commodity.
 
In 2001 my family got their first car with a factory fitted CD player, it was awesome at the time, no more having to dub CDs to tape. Fast forward 20 years and I've just bought my first car that doesn't come with a CD unit o_O
 
I feel for the employees that will be affected, but let's be honest Musica outlived its usefulness several years ago.

If I was them, I would rebrand (move away from Music and more into entertainment and automation) and then bring in Google, Sonoff, Shelby etc home automation to the general public since they have the footprint.

This this this!!! Same thing I said to CNA.
They have the footprint and the buying power to seriously grab the e-tainment market.
But when you have dinosaurs in charge, this unnecessary death is inevitable.
