Musicians' thread.

So what suggestions do you have in mind?
I like the Zoom cos of the Pedal for Wah-wah or chorus.
That's its biggest selling point for me... :o

Just tell me exactly what it is you are wanting to use it for? Just getting your guitar into a PC? Are you wanting to record vocals at all?

Guitar and vocals to PC.

What do vocals have to do with the Zoom?

edit: oops, I was under the impression the Zoom was *JUST* a guitar fx pedal thing. Didn't see until now it was an interface too. I'll echo what Copacetic says, personally I'd invest more into a dedicated interface, probably something like a Focusrite Saffire 6 http://www.orangemusic.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=426&products_id=4138

Which has good converters and MIC pres, far better than an M-Audio in the price range.

Then maybe build up pedals as you go along - or use software guitar sims.

A good interface is one of the most important things in your rig and something you don't wanna budge up.

No chance of jacking a mic into the Zoom to fiddle around with then?
(aah the n00b in me awakens)

The FastTrack we'd discussed before and it would do the job yeah.

Having owned a Fast Track Pro, I can tell you on good authority to stay the fsck away from it ;-) I ended up returning it for a full refund (buggy drivers) and found something way better second hand.

I thought that was the card you had, was waiting for this. :p

Look it was a decent product, but there is better now for the price.

The problem is their drivers, they don't update them often, and I run Win7 x64 and it would BSOD my PC - I could create the problem at will and 6/10 times it would BSOD. It would also do other odd things that I don't get into here in detail, basically after a while, even during GAMES it would start sounding like a ring modulator, no matter what I did, until I reset the PC or unplugged the USB cable etc;

I sent it for a full refund (always check your warranty period!) and out of frustration I surfed Gumtree and saw my dream soundcard for R5k second hand http://www.orangemusic.co.za/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2224

They go for R14-17k new. I am a very happy man, RME have amazing drivers, this card is quiteold but they are still adding new features and improving, the drivers are rock solid and this thing is a beast.

Obviously I'm very lucky, I'd never afford it new - but you can do far better for R2000-3000 than M-Audio.

Remember that your audio interface is the last thing in your signal path when recording, you want to have good pre amps and converters. You want to have stable drivers, low latency and support from a vendor. With Windows 8 (or if you run OSX) - updated OS's are a factor here.

Depends if you need a pedal on the thing or not?

If yes, it's going to be expensive.

Well the stomp pedal was merely for faffing about. I'm generally a rhythum guitarist and wanted to experiment. So its not vital to the recording process. My mate plays lead and has all the stomp boxes needed. I just want a usb interface with amp and effects emulators and be able to record guitar and vocal with it. And then also mix after.

Okay, I'll take a look tomorrow, see what some good choices are.

Again though, and this is coming from an amp emulation and fx snob of note, you will get much better results from VST computer based emulations and FX, compared to what you will get on the lower end pedals that will offer this functionality.

My advice is to get a nice interface with a mic in, and a instrument in, for which there are many choices:

After that, I will help you get the most amazing guitar sound you could ever hope to get out of a computer. :D

Thanks guys. I'll catch up in the afternoon on this. Now for some late night cooking, Robotech: The Masters and sleep!

Copa, you're not associated with these guys by any chance? :D :p

Must resist re-re-re-rewatching my boxed set of the original series remastered ;-)
