Pro(TM) tip with Shure mics.

Never, ever, EVER buy a second hand one.

There are a LOT of counterfeit Shure's out there, they're the most counterfeited mics in the world and the new ones are very hard to tell apart from the originals unless you know what to look for. So just make sure you buy from a authorised dealer. Check with the agents if you're not sure. I think a list is available on the Shure website.

Thanks - my buddy (the DJ and sound engineer) knows he's way around those things, so shouldn't have a hassle getting original Shure - he has a few.
Condenser mics, not dynamic for accoustic recordings yeah?
That's what I've been reading...

And that's partly where my knowledge ends - I do very little micing, especially since I only have a fake Shure sm58 lol (least I didn't pay for it!) so yeah, do your homework on that :) And never take a music store's opinion as gospel, I've met so many idiots in music stores, same goes for PC stores..

A nice trick you may like to try once you get sorted - if you have 2 mics, mic up your acoustic guitar, closely, then put another mic further in the room for a nice reverb - depending on your room acoustics and then in your mix, you can work with that, a nice tone can be had that way :) Friend of mine used to do that with vocals too.

About the audio interface, the only other thing I can suggest is, if your budget allows, maybe get something with 4 inputs, you may not need them now, but as you expand, you will want them. Or if in the future, one of them dies and the interface is out of warranty, you have 'spares'. Always think long term with these things.

Love the names of the knobs :D
Awesome looking pedal!

Yeah, it has a lovely kinda vintage tone and it's analog so it has a nice tube sorta sound, picking it up for R500 bux so I'm quite chuffed. I don't do much guitaring but I am trying to pick up bass now, will be nice to try on my guitar, bass and even synths.

That's a steal!
Is there a classifieds that you use?
All I know is gumtree, junkmail and guitarforumsSA

I'm gathering by the silence, Shake&Bake musta got lucky with a Saffire ;)

Any recommendations for powerful but very easy to use VST Sampler?
Hopefully something which will allow me to edit (cut, copy & paste) samples as well

Mmm, okay. May require me getting it from other means on the web.

Elaborate on what you want to do a little? Perhaps you just need a basic free sampler for adding voice clips or something?

Kontakt is pretty much the industry standard, and you'd be wise to look into it as pretty much every major virtual instrument uses it as the core, there's so much out there on Kontakt it's frightening :) I bought Komplete 7 which came with Kontakt and 100GB of virtual instruments, it's something I'd highly recommend.

Copa is still AWOL but if you give me an idea on what you're trying to do and what DAW you're running I can try help you out.

You can also have a poke on www.kvraudio.com - it's one of the most useful resources in this regard.

Also, www.dontcrack.com has a Freeware list.
www.renoise.com has a list somewhere on the forums for freeware vsts
and check out the Reaper forums aswell, I'd imagine there's stuff there too.

PM if you get stuck.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks for the advice.
My main DAW is Reason 5.
Let me tell what I'm trying to do first. I'm currently adding some vocals to a song I've created from an existing song (ie remix). The idea of adding the vocals only came later so my song was not created with the idea of adding vocals. Initially the vocals are in synch with my song but when the chorus & the 2nd verse comes along it becomes out of synch. So my idea is to cut parts of the song up and try adjust each fittingly with my song, the best I thought would be to cut each sentence and just lay them out individually. I loaded up the sample in NN-XT advanced sampler. What's cool about the new version of reason I can edit (cut & trim) samples inside Reason, but every time I save a different version of the sample (even under a different name) it seems to overwrite the previously saved sample :(.

So what I'm looking to do is Rewire Reason into Cubase 5...but I haven't used Cubase in years, that's why I have no VSTs. So I'm looking for a VST to cut add & adjust the pitch. I'd say I'm more reluctant to get Kontakt because of the download size

Right, ok I kind of get you.

Using Rewire might be the way to go then, perhaps try with Reaper as well, there are a dozen free samplers out there I just don't know which would be practical. I think Reaper has a basic sampler built in actually.

edit: (because I misread you)
Can't you cut up the vocal bits in audacity, load them into Reason and trigger them via midi?

ie: cut up "Every body dance now!" into each word, using Audacity, saving them as single word .wavs and then import to Reason, and trigger via midi and so on?

This was my initial objective. I use wavelab and it seems to have been corrupted somehow (most likely when I changed OS), only problem is I can't find my installation file. I'll give Audacity a go

Sweet. It's not the most amazing sound editing / processing tool, but it's free and for basic stuff, it's perfectly suitable.
