The New York Times is reporting that Muslim groups are attempting to censor Wikipedia because of images of Muhammad contained in the article about him. 'A Frequently Asked Questions page explains the site's polite but firm refusal to remove the images: "Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with the goal of representing all topics from a neutral point of view, Wikipedia is not censored for the benefit of any particular group." The notes left on [online petitions against the page] come from all over the world. "It's totally unacceptable to print the Prophet's picture," Saadia Bukhari from Pakistan wrote in a message. "It shows insensitivity towards Muslim feelings and should be removed immediately.

ag shame, poor muslims.

Here we go again... they'll prolly issue a fatwa against wikipedia

Which begs the question - Christians does not have a problem with pictures of Our Lord, but muslims do have a problem when Mohammed is depicted in a picture. Why is it so?

you know what? wikimedia should just remove the picture, our lives are none the poorer for not having seen a picture of Mohammed.

But that's the problem. If you remove that particular picture, other groups will want the same done for theirs and eventually you'll end up with a crock of ***** that doesn't deserve to be called an encyclopedia.

Those muslims should learn to grow up!

I have nothing against Muslims - but am getting more and more tired of their intollerance to anything relating to their religion or their prophet.
I have many muslim friends, one day my housemate forwarded an email to one of them depicting a cat wrapped in a bomb jacket with a muslim connotation. He retorted quite angrily but i couldnt understand why he could not just leave look at the lighter side than take it personally as an attack or something.

They are becoming more and more sensitive about these things and i dont know why.
They will laugh at jokes directed at christianity, but direct one at Islam and they take offence... Sigh, im sooo tired of all this religion crap...

We go out of our way to accomodate for Islamic people in our lives, mainly regarding the food we cook when they come to visit etc.. I will respect their choices, but they have goto have some sort of leeway, not every1 believes what they believe... they can accomodate for others as well, which they refuse to do.

That would mean giving up our freedoms to some stupid religious group or another. We should not do that, because if you give a hand today.....

In addition to numerous e-mail messages sent to Wikipedia.org, an online petition cites a prohibition in Islam on images of people.

Muhammed today Cameron Diaz tomorrow....

Why can't they learn to be tolerant? If they don't like Wikipedia, why don't they create their own wiki?

They have their own wiki... I think its called muslimwiki or something like that... but aah, the plot thickens:

Paul M. Cobb, who teaches Islamic history at Notre Dame, said, “Islamic teaching has traditionally discouraged representation of humans, particularly Muhammad, but that doesn’t mean it’s nonexistent.” He added, “Some of the most beautiful images in Islamic art are manuscript images of Muhammad.”

The idea of imposing a ban on all depictions of people, particularly Muhammad, dates to the 20th century, he said. With the Wikipedia entry, he added, “what you are dealing with is not medieval illustrations, you are dealing with modern media and getting a modern response.

Classic.

A lesson for people: you do not have the right not to be offended.

Very stupid...If I were to be a Muslim, ill be glad cause now ppl can see what my god is like...this way he gets "advertised"...

agreed.

i cant' see why they're getting upset. i personally would like to see what he looked like. i would think that people might get more into their religion if they could see what he looked like. why all this mystery and deceit? what are they hiding? what are they afraid of? what are they afraid we will see?

And how does he look?
How does Jesus look?
Did they take pics with their camera phones?

Pictures in Islam is forbidden. Pictures/drawings of The Prophet is forbidden.
Praising the Prophets grave, hair, swords are forbidden.
