If you purchase Seagate HDDs from Mustek please be aware that they (Mustek) do NOT honour the standard 5-year warranty as advertised by Seagate. I have a drive in the workshop which ought to have a year left on the warranty and Mustek PE have said it is out of warranty. When I asked how it could be out of warranty since Seagate offer a 5-year warranty the only answer I could get was "The system says it is out of warranty."

Nice one Mustek! Very proudly South African and screwing your customers just like Telkom. Thank you for that.

SN: 3JS20KZK Purchased in 2004 as part of a Mustek system.

You probably find that the warranty is from date of manufacture... and they had the drives sitting around for quite awhile before selling them.

How Long Does the Coverage Last? Seagate will publish a warranty period for each product (the “Product”) as part of the Product and price list. The warranty period for each Product begins on the date of shipment to the OEM customer. For Product sold to a Seagate OEM customer (“OEM”), the standard warranty period is three (3) years for Notebook and Desktop drives and five (5) years for Enterprise and Nearline drives.

mustek obviously buy the drive in oem quantities, and oem packaging, and without a doubt the 3 year OEM warrantee applies.

if you buy the drive in a shop in a pretty retail box, then it is 5 years.
enterprise drive tend to be any scsi drives and other high-end products
hope that clear it up a bit

Yup, please follow the above link to validate the warranty. I got my OEM Segate from FrontoSA beginning of April, and the warranty on Seagate site suggested it's shipped to OEM customer on March, so I got 59 months warranty in actual.

I purchase my Seagate HDDs from Rectron in OEM packaging and they all have a 5-year warranty. I've never had an issue with Rectron and warranties which their staff could not explain to me over the phone at the time the problem arose.

I phoned Rectron with the serial number and got an explanation in under 3 mintues! How's that for customer service? They didn't sell the drive BUT they could actually be bothered to answer my question!

That answer is actually very simple: Seagate introduced the 5-year warranty in August 2004 and the drive was purchased before August 2004. Very simple answer to a very simple question.

LOOK AND LEARN MUSTEK PE!

It all depends on the warranty Seagate offered at the time when you purchased the HD/system. My Seagate HD clearly states it's OEM and when I check on their website it's five year warranty.

yes, i am acutely aware that warrantee periods have changed in the recent past. as the parent poster said he had purchased in 2004 I gave him 2004 rules, as they applied at the time of purchase.
in 2002, you wouldve got a 1yr warrantee.

Mustek, Rectron and Corex are all the same company :)

Interesting how different the service is between Rectron and Mustek. Corex don't have a branch in PE so I can't comment on them but I have to say I find the technical staff at the PE branch of Mustek singularly unhelpful. Their sales people, on the other hand, are very good. In fact, the sales staff (in particular Jason) are more knowledgeable and helpful with troubleshooting their POS hardware than the technical staff.

I honestly don't have a bad word to say about Rectron PE, their staff ALL are incredibly helpful and friendly. They really DO go the extra mile for their customers.

Let me clarify - I am a technician, this is not my personal system. It belongs to a new customer who purchased it from a computer shop no longer in business in Jeffreys Bay. :) Nothing new there then! LOL

I think my problem with Mustek was actually their unwillingness to explain WHY it was out of warranty. I know the 5-year warranty started in 2004 - I was unsure of the exact month - all I required was an explanation. I'm not an unreasonable person but when I ask a question and the staff member can only keep repeating "The system says it's out of warranty" like a stuck record and can offer no logical explanation I believe I am entitled to get angry. When I tried to escalate the call to the Technical Department Supervisor I was given the run-around.

Compare that to Rectron: I explain my problem and Shandre says "I'll call you back." In precisely 3 minutes she calls me to explain why the warranty will not be honoured. "The drive was purchased before August 2004 when the 5-year warranty was introduced." - that's all it took to make me a happy camper.
