I was one of the lucky 1000 people to get a 1 month free uncapped account with Mweb. As you would of expected I was pretty excited about being one of the 1000 people and was happy that I could test their service before signing up.

A few days later I received a call from Mweb telling me I have to fill in some documentation that they have sent to me vie email and would have to send them proof of address aswell as a copy of my ID.

I was also told that I have to put my banking details on the Mweb Application form and that if I didn't want the service after the 1 month I would have to call them and cancel it by the 20th of April or else they will charge me for the next month!? So I actually have to sign a contract with them to receive my free uncapped for 1 month!

I was a bit irritated that this had not been mentioned in the form I filled out when entering the give away. If I knew I had to sign up with them first I wouldn't of even put my email address into the site!

However I decided it may be worth it after all and sent in 3 pages of Mweb forms with all my information on including my bank details,my ID,A electricity bill and a letter from the owner of the house I reside in!

Now today I have received a call telling me I will not be able to get an account with Mweb because I do not have a proof of residence with my name on it!

I have had a Web Africa account,A openWeb account,A afrihost account and a axxess account and I have never had to send in proof of residence but I did with Mweb and I sent them a letter from the owner of the place I live stating I am living their and it just doesn't cut it?

I have also got a free 1 month digichilli account before that I won just like with Mweb yet I didn't have to send them anything! I just got emailed the account and vowala it worked!

YOU SUCK MWEB!

In exactly the same boat.
In the FAQ they say the have to do it due to RICA regulations, i say BS.
Whats so hard about sending out an email with a login/pass to those 1000 users?

Worst of all when I explained that I had no bank statements with my residents on it(My PO Box number is on my Bank statements) the woman on the phone sounded annoyed! I proceeded to tell her that I had never had to send in that kind of information for any other ISP and named Afrihost and Web Africa,She then told me"We have nothing to do with Web Africa sir"

In the end I told her to scrap my documentation if I don't get back to her because I would rather go with another ISP like afrihost!

Agreed its not somthing you "WON" if you have to sign up to claim your prize! This just shows how dodgy Mweb really is! I wont put a dime on Mwebs table if they cant fix this problem!

Heard of upselling?
They are just getting everything in place for when you choose to stay with MWEB then you wouldn't have to do it and everything is in place... think a bit further please - it makes sense after all.
Plus, RICA is a serious requirement, they might just be treating it with more respect than the other players.

I can understand your frustration, however lets look at Afrihost, revered due to its excellent service, there to you needed quite the number of documentation submitted before you could open an account. Also if I`m not correct, if they asked for proof of address, its generally accepted that your name should appear on the "proof" so that umm you can prove its your address?

To take this further lets not joke around, even if you had to fill out 4 X that amount of forms 99% of us would still jump at the chance for free cap! Thats just what it is, a free trial on their terms, if you dont like filling out a few forms and giving out your details to Mweb then Im sure they could maybe, just maybe find someone to take your place.

I was never asked for a proof of residence. I was just asked to send back the forms and my ID. My account is still active. However I'm still waiting for R299 credit cause I took the 4Mbps I didn't want the 512k uncapped.

Definitions of trial on the Web:

* test: the act of testing something

I would like to test the product before signing anything!
Do you sign papers to buy a car before you have driven it?

Before you test drive a car you do indeed sign insurance and other forms :erm:

When I was with Afrihost everything was filled in online and all I had to send them was a copy of my ID!

That's correct however if you are staying in a house where every document is in your wifes name you hve no proof of address,in cases like this the owner of the address(eg: wife in this example) must sign a letter stating that this person is staying at the address she resides! Banks accept this, don't they also have to comply with Rica?

I yet again agree with you! This is why I filled in all the documentation and did everything they asked to the point I was not able! I have no address in my name but I sent the required documentation as proof that I live where I say I do,there is nothing else I can do! I will repeat what I said earlier, the documentation I sent to Mweb was the same documentation I sent to my bank to prove I lived where I say I did!

players.
If this is the case then they should ask the so called"Winner" if they would like to complete the documentation before hand or when they want to start the contract! Instead they are making these so called winners sign-up for a service where you have to sign out of or they will charge you...You have to admit that's not much of a competition more than it is a scheme to get people to subscribe! just think about it,It doesn't make so much sense after all does it?

As I said banks approve of the documentation I sent to them how can they not! I would love to give my account that I have to sign up for away to some one who wants it :) if you are able to convince Mweb to do this please get them to contact me! Tell them Edwin Watson wants to give you his 1 month free and they must get in contact with me and I will be over the moon if they actually do it :D

I was also told that I was gonna get a R299 discount but it turns out that I have to pay R360 instead of R240 (R539 - R299). Nice lies mweb.

No Lies here. I have read somewhere from the mweb guy stating if you take one of the faster lines you will have to pay the difference in what they're giving away for free, I think I have seen it mentioned a few times.

By the way before I get flamed. i don't work for MWEB, I never even had any dealings with them ever, nor will I probably in the future. (it so easy on the forums to get accused of having some kind of relationship when you try to defend a company)

As for the RICA requirements I guess mweb will be ready while a lot of ISP's will have to scramble at the last moment to get their house in order

If you read his post he said that he is willing to pay for the line upgrade difference but they are over charging him for it. Instead of him paying R240 he has been told he has to pay R360
Uncapped 4MB=R539-R299(512kbps he "won")=R240 he has to pay in but instead he has to pay in R360 so they ripping him off by R120 :)

I am happy Mweb are complying with RICA However they are not doing it correctly, the documentation I sent to them was all correct and my bank accepted it for RICA so why cant Mweb?

Chill dudes.

They have now reversed the option. Instead of automatically signing you up at the end of the month, they will now cancel the account unless you inform them that you do want it to continue. You should be getting emails towards the end of the month informing you of this.

Hmm well at least you guys are getting somewhere. I was one of the 1000 and I still haven't received any email since "MWEB will contact you directly in the next week to sort out your free subscription and confirm all of your details.". I thought it was automated? I must say, becoming part of a trial was one thing WebAfrica made really easy and effective - I dont see why there has to be such a delay/process for us to get our trial account user/pass?

same here

Give them a call?

These offerings are so cheap I think I am going to pass on my free month just to avoid MWeb's MWebbedness ;)
