Hi there

I have not been able to find an answer to this question after numerous searches... So please don't bite my head off if this is a repeat question...

I just would like to know from current mweb 4 mbps uncapped shaped subscribers about the current speeds they are getting during peak hours for torrents, news networks etc. I am not a heavy downloader but I am considering this option but obviously don't want to get 3 kb/s out of a possible 400 kb/s. I would be happy with around 50 - 60 if that is possible.

So feedback on the above would be appreciated as I have learnt from threads that Mweb heavily shapes this type of traffic.

during day about 40-50kbs ( i get near 2gig running 8 am till 5pm)

after 12 am-7am about 300kbs+, getting about 10gigs a night or near that.

news is more constant then torrents of course.

if you download news and it is cached on mweb news server you get full speed even during the day.

You can also get good speeds on filehosts during the day. Some are shaped to 30-50Kb while others will go 100-250.

Wow ok. So this isn't a bad connection to have then as I currently download roughly 30 gb a month but that is not all the time. Last month only managed 10 because thats all I wanted. This is why i asked what it's like. I am currently with cybersmart and am not willing to pay R800 for 15 gb plus free band width on night rider.

I download using news groups.

It depends where you download... I use a mix of international (Astroweb) and local news servers.

During the day I get about 50 to 70kb

Speeds up at 11pm to 100kb to 150kb and then after 1am full speed until 8am.

Over the weekends 1am to 8am Full speed, the rest of the day between 100kb to 240kb

I have found that the international news server are more heavy shaped than the local stuff. If I only use Astrobweb... then its 4kb to 10kb during the day, from 6pm its 40kb, 11pm 80kb and from 1am full speed.

Of course if something is cached.. then its full speed anytime.

+1

Identical setup and results.

Whats HTTP streaming like, YouTube, UStream, Gametrailers, Gamespot etc?

youtube hd sometimes buffers if it is not cached i think.

but i can watch 1080p no buffer if it is cached works fine. ( fine= 500kbs) 6mb line sync

I've had no problems whatsoever with streaming on MWEB's 4Mb uncapped accounts. Justin.TV worked well, YouTube worked well too. I could do 480p with no buffering a good couple of times, but I tend to stay with 360p anyway.

yeah 360 and 480 is never a problem.

just hd on newish vids tend to not use more then 100kbs of my line.

Yeah this was an issue when I was with them, and then sometimes the video will stop playing half way although it seems buffered (Caching corruption?) Hope theyve fixed that by now...

no that's browser, if buffered and not playing.

i don't have issue with ie9, but i hate using it :(

i have problem at work and we on IS

I've converted from MWEB uncapped to Afrihost IS uncapped. World of difference in terms of torrent downloads. Movies are downloading 10x faster. It's unreal. Of course, the downside is Afrihost IS becomes unusably slow at times whereas Mweb is always usable (albeit slow on Torrents).

yeah 10 days fast and 10 days slow because of the throttling period :(

il go test some vids tonight with IE9 and chrome etc, just make sure

I somehow doubt its a browser issue, I can dial out onto afrihost, refresh the page and it will load fine... Refreshing the page whilst connected to the ISP with the issue does not correct the video tho, it freezes in the exact same place... could be wrong tho, will try browser swapping tho I cant live without FF! >.<

ff gave me the most issues, switched to chrome helped a bit.

most noticeable is new released vid, just want to buffer in hd, but yeah i will install ie9 tonight again.

IceDream go with TRL. Your usage is similar to mine. TRL are with Cybersmart. I pay R670 for my 4meg line plus 30GB unshaped data. I cannot afford R900 for the luxury of having uncapped. at least i am getting what i want, torrents, streaming, etc.

I will definitely go check this out. Sounds more along my requirements.
