MWEB 40Mbps bonded ADSL held back by Telkom

Questions have also been raised as to whether Telkom’s infrastructure can support the 10Mbps ADSL upgrades, and here Joubert said that they do see sporadic problems at certain exchanges when it comes to ADSL speeds.

Telkom's infrastructure does not even support 2meg speeds at my premises & no-one at Telkom can tell me when my exchange will be upgraded.
Telkom is like a lucky packet - you never know what you're getting until after you paid and open the bag.
 
and on that bombshell... on to better things, roads now only have potholes half a man deep... :P
 
+1 - this just might change my opinion of MWEB's services - if FTH functions, without restrictions.

Michael, I can tell you that much - since I left WebAfrica (Bussiness) and joined MWeb Business (with Fixed IP) I have had great service and no more latency problems. There are the odd problem - but I can now do all hosting myself and am not dependent on the slow WA Cape Town datacentre - which gave me so many pains. Not to mention that WA does not have a fixed-ip business service available.
 
ye well with regards to telkom's 10mb upgrades, im still sitting on 4mb 7 months later after the upgrades started :'(
down this end of cape town on the bergvliet exchange!!! & its not like there are not many 4mb users as the bergvliet exchange covers the whole of tokai, parts of retreat, meadowrige, bergvliet & even diep river!!!! so we talking a minimum of 20 to 50 000 users.. but thats just a guess.. im sure there are at least about 1 000 4mb users...

come on telkom pull your head out your ass & get a move it!!! 7 months is a frikken joke!!!

How does LLU solve the problem if the incumbent is still required to do the maintenance (which costs more than the price of the copper)? And what options will be used for the backhaul from the exchange?
 
That 36% is still a problem.
Telkom should be either 100% Guv-mint owned and run, or 100% Pvt.
 
why bond say 3 x 4Mbps lines for 12Mbps if ADSL2+ supports up to 24Mbps on a single line/copper pair... such a waste of infrastructure - ridiculously counter-intuitive. Then another client that desperately wants ADSL gets met with the dreaded "Sorry no ports are available in your exchange". I'm VERY surprised, apart from profit incentives, that Telkom haven't prohibited bonding yet... suppose it's out of their control =/

Out of neccessity. Even if it were on offer locally, to get anywhere near 24Mbps your loop must be of high quality, in a good state of repair and < 2000m (or <20dB ds attn).

This is certainly not the norm locally, few on 10Mbps enabled ports can even maintain sync/performance at 10240.

Correct, locally avaliable solutions do not bond at the ADSL/PPPoE layer, since Telkom do not support this (on their ESRs). At higher layers, they have no say in the matter.

Ok yeah valid point, but still =P Sure 24mbps for one line is hard-pressed, but 10 mbps is reasonable. The idea of bonding like 4-8 ADSL lines just seems a bit absurd. I guess if it works and people are willing to pay and Telkom doesn't crack down on it, then what the heck... ;/ Another problem is that many exchanges are heavily contended... when I read "40Mbps bonded" I just pictured in my mind the problems that so many exchanges are having with a lack of backhaul capacity to the ESR... so ONE client rapes the exchange with his bonded connection and everyone else that's subject to contention suffers bad latency and speed degradation. You can't deny that bonding completely destroys contention at the DSLAM level... So fortunately it's out of reach for most home users in terms of cost.

Uncapped also completely destroys contention at DSLAM level.

I do not think that telkom's DSLAMS have the capacity of handling so many uncapped users on a DSLAM.

We had a problem a while back where all 3 our adsl lines were slow. One day mweb had a problem with international connectivity and all of a sudden we reached full speed on all our lines. When international came back up, we were crawling again

I dont see how bonding has any bearing on the matter.

There is no load difference to the DSLAM whether its handling 4 individual customers each with a 4Mbps line of a certain capability (e.g. business grade unshaped/uncapped) or one customer with 4 of them (bonded or not bonded).

How can't you see that bonding will have a bad effect in terms of contention? The basic principle of contention ratios assumes that not all customers will be maxing out their lines at any given time, so an allocation of say 4Mbps could be divided amongst 4 users on a large-scale (so like 400Mbps total capacity for 400 users) so that even if those users each have 4Mbps packages, that 400Mbps would be enough for the customers to still obtain 4Mbps on their lines because not all lines will be utilized fully at any given time so that quality of service by average remains good for all customers; but as soon as you bring in bonding, then when one customers starts a download which maxes out all the lines which form that bond, then it certainly disrupts the contention ratios especially if that exchange's capacity is low... I doubt Telkom takes bonding into account when they work out the number of clients to supply per exchange based on that exchanges total bandwidth capacity (ie: the contention ratio)... so clearly bonding is asking for trouble here if those margins are slim
