MWEB 4meg Uncapped Shaped: My first two nights

Just got a call from them to check if everything is good, and it is. Constant ~300ms pings in WoW and almost 400k/s downloads.

I'm happy! Thank you very much guys, great service!

Damn you Yak I want my speed back. Downloading, or attempting to download, the newest PS3 software update and I am getting nothing. It started well but just seemed to drop off as the seconds went by. My line only synchs at 2 megs though. Torrents were going at 0 to but were peaking at about 100 earlier. Looks as if it could be down to my line though, for some reason my connection is dropping a lot. **** Telkom. Amen

Muuuch better! I could watch a video on YouTube at 720p (HD) without buffering, all the way through :)

Hi TheYak

I am glad to hear that your speeds are better tonight.
Thank you for the feedback.

I am very disappointed to say that I am having the same problem tonight. Horrible speeds, terrible latency and added on top this week, very unhelpful people at the support desk. I was told to phone Telkom to find out if there's a problem on the line. Spent half an hour on the phone with Telkom... no problem on the line. I phone back and the Call Centre is closed. Great.

Two serious speed issues in, basically, a week. Good going so far, guys... :(

Please contact me so this problem can be resolved. Hopefully permanently this time.

Hi TheYak

Our specialists are looking into this.

Thanks. I checked this morning and it looked like it was better again, but I can't have problems once a week... it's no good.

I had weekly problems, totally intermittent, for a couple of months. It was definately an exchange issue (congestion or bad cards in the exchange) and eventually after 5 or 6 faults were logged i threw my toys out of the cot and got Telkom to resolve the issue... have had no problems since then (about a month now). The problem is they tend to send a techie, who spends a day or so stuffing around changing pairs, then when the problem resolves itself they clear the fault.

I phoned Telkom last night and got them to check everything on my line and there were no problems. I've been fighting with them for months to get my line sorted out and they finally managed it two or so weeks ago. So it's definitely not my line... If it was, then it would have been a problem all the time, not just once a week, right?

I really hope MWEB can sort it out, 'cos when the connection works, it's insanely fast and very reliable.

I understand the problems you are having, because i encounter the same ones currently. But a friend of mine explained something to me rather nicely.

No one is guaranteed a particular speed... The service offering clearly states on Telkom`s website that on a 4 meg line a minimum of 640kbps and a maximum of 4096kbps downstream.

Now this gets affected negative based on the contention ratios that MWeb allows on, the traffic that gets allowed and the bandwidth that gets consumed during the times of day/night that you use it.

It is practical, i admit, that when everyone decides to download 3 movies, watch youtube and play dota online that the speed will be reduced dramatically. These are factors that i wasn't really fully aware of when i signed up and also thought that i would joyfully reap the rewards of uncapped without its consequence's and technicalities.

When the line is tested, it seems that all is ok, probably because all is ok. Other users are just doing the same thing like you in your area which is causing congestion. Hence one day you`ll have super fast DL and the next, a slower experience.

Also the infrastructure is rather dated for the technology we are pushing through it, and until its upgraded to meet the demands of today, we will continuously encounter such problems.

In the case of Throttling, your service provider is in control of this. This is another story all together, perhaps someone would like to explain how this is done and why. Apparently, MWeb does not throttle but rather blames congestion (during peak) for slower experiences.

I am happy with how it was explained to me, and atm anything in excess of 20gigs a month is worthwhile for me.

Thurnie, what you are saying makes sense and I am aware of it, but they need to make sure that their infrastructure can handle the load, in my opinion. They cannot expect people to put up with shoddy service like this. I pay for a specific service and I should get that or very close to it.

My connection was, for all intents and purposes, useless last night. If they want to sell a service that only works sometimes, then surely I should get discount on my monthly payment for the times that I couldn't use the connection I'm paying for? It's like selling a tank to a diver that might not give them oxygen all the time, but it works okay most of the time.

Whether it's practical for them or not, it's still unacceptable.

I fully agree with what you say, but then again you also get what you pay for.
I think once we have the Telkom Lines sorted, can we eliminate the real culprits.
I find that the current ISP`s blame telkom (even when they throttle you) for everything and when the lines is tested and ok, Telkom in turn automatically then blame your ISP for shaping of services.
We have no real recourse I found, but to sit it out. I come from having all my internet services with telkom and enjoyed its blazing speeds, but with a cap of 5gig. I would certainly have no issue reverting back to them if they broaden their service offerings or perhaps lower their out-of-bundle gig prices of R66 with no month carry over.

I am certainly with you on this one, but have come to the sad realization that shouting, complaining and winging is a tiring process that cost money and have little to no rewards at the end.

Until i find an alternative, Mweb is the better option amongst the rest for the price.

As i said, it was an intermittent problem so the line would be fine for a week or so, then it would go to hell for 2 or 3 days, then it would correct itself... Always seemed to happen on a Sunday for some reason? Sounds very similar to your issues. Eventually i tracked down the telkom infrastructure team in my area and got them directly involved, only then did it seem to come right.

See, the thing is: you shouldn't have to go through all of that to get a service working that you PAY for... I would understand if, for example, I was getting 200k/s downloads instead of 400k/s. But to get constant time-outs and page not found errors and 6000+ ms pings in World of Warcraft instead of 300, is just unacceptable.

Been sitting on the phone with them for 22 minutes... and I've been on hold for about 17 of those. *sigh*

Very very very disappointed... :(

07:44 - Held for about 20 minutes! Eish. I was told that a technical specialist will phone me.

My MWEB line works very well with my xtreamer i.e. online radio, movie trailors, live news etc etc.

The only thing I have a problem with, and I can understand shaping during business hours, but during off-peak I'd expect more than 80k/s on a 4meg line on my usenet account. That's more than 1/4 of my line being shaped. Im not saying I should get full speed but 1/4 is just a bit ridiculous if you ask me
