MWEB Announcement - Internet Solutions will acquire MWEB

I am ashamed to admit that I have been using MWEB as my ISP. I stayed on MWEB for Fon access, but since they have moved to VAST and with the sale of the company, I want to look around for another option. I currently have a 4Mbps line with Telkom and the 4Mbps uncapped package (R239 per month, was upgraded to 8Mbps recently.) Which ISP should I consider as a replacement?

I was a happy mweb subscriber but between June/July/August, video streaming totally sucked. No video was loading at all between 8am and 11pm. Phoned support and they were totally unhelpful. Moved over to Afrihost and things have really been much better.

Really hope this deal improves MWEB's internet services.

Why would you pay for a service that is subpar to something that you can get for free? Gmail for storage and something like protonmail for security.... all free?

Email Address, had it for years. It like your cellphone number, we should be able to port it.

It's not hard to move over to gmail, set gmail up to collect your isp mail. send & receive all mail via gmail, people replying will automatically reply to the new address, update your email details with your bank, insurance etc and any online service you use.
Send a change of email address out once a month for three months to all your contacts.

Interesting...

One could see it coming after Mweb Business was sold.

Good for IS. Could be potentially good or bad for current Mweb subscribers.

Although I must admit I always hoped Naspers would combine Mweb and Multichoice to make a true triple play offering.

Guess not.

MWEB and ShowMax would have been a more logical fit (they did do some cross promotion), I don't think they would want to bring the lucrative dish business into a triple play.

It's not that hard to change email address. Just send out two mass emails - a personal one to friends and family and a formal one to colleagues and business relationships. You can also send them out again two days later to politely state it again for good measure.

I changed my primary address when I discovered that I owned <firstname><surname>@gmail.com for my name. I took it out when Gmail was in closed beta and I was in junior school, and totally forgot. It was pretty easy moving over. Barely anything continued to the old address, and because I kept it working for a brief period I could just update those contacts onto the new address.

You definitely don't want your email address tied to an ISP. Not only does it look kinda backwards technologically, but they can access your mailbox if they chose to and you're beholden to their continued existence. It's pretty easy to get your own domain too.

And no, you definitely should not be able to port your email address. The domain belongs to someone. Either buy your own domain or use a reliable and respected one like Gmail.

So what's happening with the MWEB brand now? From what I understand, they no longer have any clients after this sale. Wonder if they'll kill it off completely...

I am guessing all DSL clients will be moved to the IS Backbone and the Mweb IPC network will be shut down, I see no value in running double IPC. Ex Mweb Business clients have already been migrated to IS network based services.

Well this sucks. I've been on Mweb since the 384k days (I actually had a Big Black Box back in the day, but moved away for several years) and, while they went through a rough time in the early days of uncapped with people trying to download the entire internet every night, the service has been brilliant since the abusers moved away. Oh, and the Seacom incident circa 2011.

Other than the downtime during the Seacom incident, I haven't had an issue with them. I get full line-speed 24/7 and very low pings (sub 30ms) to the local BF4 servers. I make use of the @Vast access (although I do miss AlwaysOn), and I use one of the Mweb/Fon routers.

I have tried multiple other ISPs during this time, but only ever for a day or two at a time before I start missing the experience I'm used to.

I hope none of this changes with the buyout, else I'm not quite sure what I'll do for internet access.

I have been an MWEB user ever since my previous ISP was bought out by them.

It will be interesting for a not-so-tech-savvy user like myself to see what transpires. I have been experiencing very slow speeds lately, and my queries to MWEB have gone largely unaswered despite being promised a phone-back on several occasions. I hope that this is not a signal of what is to come....

Mixed feelings, IS has been the best backbone I have ever been on compared to Afrihost. So it should be a good thing, however IS ain't cheap so expect price increases, but then again neither was Mweb.

I've had a look around at various options, and for my specific needs, Mweb actually turned out to be very reasonably priced, but this may obviously be different for different packages. Been happy so far the past two years (moved from Afrihost), but wondering what effect this acquisition by Internet Solutions will have on my experience...
