As the title states Mweb is gone now. Looking for a ISP that does noy get affected when Seacom dies and preferably one that does not throttle me blind after x GB, so basically like mweb without the Seacom part. Any suggestions which ISP to move to? Ive heard that Openweb and Afrihost are the main contenders, some also mentioned plugg, axxess etc.

Telkom. I am moving from AH to Telkom on the 1st. Telkom has reduced their prices dramatically, and I have read some good things about them. AH is super slow for me, and I don't even bother to create a ticket, as they a) resolve the ticket without fixing the issue and b) always blame telkom or my line, which is not the case, as I go on with my FNB and it's super fast. So I have had enough.

You should really try to recommend products you have actually used before.

@saa044, why don't you try a few trial accounts and see what works for you? I know OpenWeb does that, and in my experience they do not throttle at all. I do over 200 Gigs a month on a 1mb line.

On the silver accounts or Bronze?

Was also very keen on moving to Telkom, but I wred somewhere on Mybb that some users started to experience some problems after x gb, so not soooo sure anymore. Pity you cant buy your months ADSL like at Gconnect, pay as you go type effect.

I'm on Gold, only R230 per month.

Free wifi, and SSL Encryption is allowed on your usenet downloads. Fully Unshaped every weekend and on holidays.

Tempting, im on 4mbps now and man for the gold 4mbps its over R700 a month, bit to high for me unfortunately.

You can always go for this one if you are okay with slightly slower speed.
2Mbps Gold Uncapped (Easter Edition) – R299pm!

slightly slower speeds with zero throttling is better than 4mbs that gets throttled after the first 100 gigs imo.

I don't know much about plugg but i'm betting they are better than telkom or axxess, if OW is too expensive for you (also IS iirc)

To be honest If I were you, I'd go month to month on some or other ISP, and wait for OpenWeb to bring back their Silver 2-fo-1 special.
Their Silver uncapped is almost just as good as their Gold, it's cheaper, and you actually get 2 accounts for the price of one.

They come around quite often... maybe you should wait a month or so?

Can any MyBB members remember what the OpenWeb Silver 2-for-1 accounts were going for?

i agree AH has basically created 1 entry level home product for the low usage users so they're not an option for Internet addicts. TElkom's 1Mbps product is the same price as Mweb. Their support lines elevator music would drive me up the wall.

The 2 for one worked out to quite a bit less per acc...but then you've got 2 when really you only need 1.

Keeper why would you want to run usenet through SSL? You can easily max out the line without it so whats the point? I specifically switched it off...zero benefit for me & screws with the shaping mechanism unnecessarily.

2 for 1 can work great for me, I own a business so would save that way on internet. Regarding news servers, supernews allows port 80, works great for me sometimes. :)

Security.
I like my downloads encrypted.

No issues for me when using SSL, and OpenWeb allows it and they don't bother you about it either....so why not?
If you were on any other ISP though, I guess you are just gonna have to disable SSL and live with see-thru ports.

You might as well ask me why I have a password on my e-mail.

Then you should definitely wait for that special to come around again.
Maybe use axxess vouchers or something for a month or so and wait it out... it will be worth it.

I moved to OpenWeb Gold 1mb Uncapped a month ago from Telkom 2mb Uncapped. Telkom were great last year but had lots of issues in January 2013 & then they started softcapping in February 2013. So far OpenWeb has been ok. Shaped quite heavily during office hours.

Neighbour moved from Mweb 1mb Uncapped to Afrihost 1mb Uncapped and has been quite happy for the past month.

Have been with Axxess before but only for a short period. It was not very good :(

Joined Afrihost on the 1st of April, currently not regretting it, will see once I start to pull data.

Isn't the Gold account supposed to be unshaped??

Telkom - only problem in over a year was February with the soft capping - wasn't a problem in March.

Unshaped ALL the time... not just afterhours.
