Mweb customer - switch to Afrihost?

Hi
I have just joined this forum and this is my first post which is directed at Afrihost's Afriman...
I have been with Mweb these pass 2 years on a 4mb ADSL uncapped package which costs R539-00 per month. It is efficient in terms of connectivity and performance with respect to upload and download speeds. Afrihost is offering virtually the same package such as download speed and usage before throttling but at a reduced price of R397-00, a saving of R142-00 per month which is well worth it.
I would like to know if this is sustainable over a long period of time of say 12 - 60months and how will the efficiency of the service in terms of connectivity and upload/download speeds be ensured. This will go a lond way in a decision to change to Afrihost.

Thanks for your reply.

Login to the Mweb customer zone and pull your average usage over the past 12 months. Mine was 200Gb per month - some months as high as 350Gb, some less. Afriman confirmed it's all good given their new system. My only reservation is the backbone... do Afrihost use IS or Seacom? AFAIK Mweb uses Seacom mainly for uncapped, with SAIX backup which appears to have improved since the early days. Anyone with info?

Few weeks = a month...
Why not sign up, put through 1 months cancellation notice then you'll be free to do what you want in a few weeks time anyway...

Cause then it will cost me an extra R539 for mwebs calendar notice.

If things fail with afrihost then you have to get the line transferred back into you name before you can move as well.

If mweb don't drop their prices soon then I'm going to seriously consider moving, as are many others I'm sure.

Mr AfriMan:

What about a capped account, say 10Gb/month that you can pay a year in advance and get a hefty discount (like Cybersmart)?

We are monitoring the sign-up and usage on these accounts, and the moment we feel that product could be impacted (in terms of quality) we could decide to withdraw the product or increase the price. However, with Afrihost you ALWAYS get the product you signed up for, for as long as you stay with us. No matter what happens in the future, you get what you signed up for at the price you signed up.

Hope that answers your question :)

We run on the IS backbone, which is primarily on Seacom.

It is actually cheaper than that if you move your line too. Mweb full package = R900 (4MB line + 4Mb uncapped) , Afrihost is R700. So it is a R200 saving, which is definitely starting to be a big deal.

Correct! Our 4Mbps bundle comes in at R697. But what I see a lot of people doing is signing up for the 10Mbps account on a 4Mbps line, becuase you can access way more data, throttle is basically a non-issue becuase it has to drop below 4Mbps before you notice it, and you are basicaly paying the same as what you were paying with other ISP's.

Just saying

Hi AfriMan,
Considering all 384 lines will be upgraded to 1meg. Will this change your bundle price?
Once those upgrades come in, it looks like it will be cheaper to not get your bundle but stay with Telkom and get Afrihost uncapped.

E.g

Telkom
R152.30 (estimated line rental for 1meg in Aug?)
+ R199 (Afrihost uncapped)
= R351.3

Vs

Afrihost
1meg uncapped bundle = R397

If Telkom upgrades go according to plan, the pricing will most likely change, but at this stage we do not have confirmation that pricing will stay the same, whether your line is with Telkom or with other ISP's. Telkom have made several provisional statements, but there is no final commitment from them. It also depends how many test sites they roll out, and over what period they do so.

At present, we are not expecting the actual uogrades to take place before September, and we keep everyone up to date on changes, based what info we get from Telkom.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated.
I'll probably signup for a bundle then rather than wait! : )

I've signed up... using my data in the meantime while I wait patiently for my line to be ugraded from 384 to 1024... apparently takes 7 to 14 days :(
