mweb email address - sigh

If the e-mail address is so important why don't you ask MWEB if you can keep the mail adress and only pay for that and switch your ISP? Normally ISP's charge R20 to 40 for only a e-mail account.

Well if your ISP had balls, they should just let you use the address. As long as it isn't used for abuse, I dont see whats wrong with having a couple of hundred clients' email addresses left on the system. Its not like it really costs you anything. *sigh*

I know, but you cant always rely upon the generosity of an ISP, especially the greed-driven monstrosity called mweb.

We pay R39 a month for our email address through mweb
(a yebo.co.za acct..)

The website for domain registration is http://co.za/ There is no www in front of it. Go to that address and all the details are there as to how to buy a domain name. Will cost you R50.00 a year.

You would then require an ISP to host your website and email address. Go to http://www.hellkom.co.za/hostprices.php?type=linuxlocal&order=title for ISPs that offer hosting. The prices for hosting range for R19.00 a month upwards. Many of the hosting ISP’s actually do all the registration of domain names for you and the initial set up on their systems.

Unless you are going to leave your computer running 24 hours a day and have a permanently assigned IP address you cant host it yourself.

Your email address would then be [email protected].

I have searched and searched google for this free hosting and the only thing I can find is a beta version for hosting which one has to apply for and then if they choose you, you in effect become a "tester". Is this what you referring to about free google hosting? https://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/admins/overview.html

If not I cant find anything on google

I believe that is what he's talking about! In most cases I think google will accept you as a tester. So sign up and see what they say.

Also mention something about the isp's and how they operate to lock you in and give that as one of the reasons why you are wanting to use their service. I'm sure they won't say no :)

Just registered 2 domains with them and was approved automatically and immediately for both.

Thats just google being google.

AFAIK the only thing they have that is out of beta (testing) is the search.

Google labels services that are yet to show profit as beta, it has absolutely nothing to do with the reliability or state of the service. In fact I would prefer it if Gmail remained beta since they Invite system will remain until it moves out of beta and that means millions of Nigerian scammers (yahoo anyone?) jump on to the Gmail bandwagon and spoil the service for the rest of us.
 
I think that's why they still have the invite system and they're trying to keep it in some form almost indefinitely.
 
Yip, thats the one, it doesn't take long to signup, and you will be accepted immediately. Just try it out.
 
Does MWeb's "Forwarding" function in the adsl.mweb.co.za setting.. keep the email "on the server" for viewing or does it delete it once its forwarded it?
 
the fear of changing emails is such a strange thing for me. all sorts of things change in life and things don't fall apart.
 
I'd be too embarrassed to ever utter the words my email address is @mweb.co.za :sick:

Come on people, simply change your sending address to your new address, send out a changed email address notice, and put on an auto responder alerting of the new email address. Run that for a few months if you're that concerned.

Then go get yourself whipped for ever relying on an ISPs email address in the first place. naughty, naughty.

It keeps the setting until you turn it off - or your account is terminated.

I rely on Google Mail for my private messages, work-related stuff goes to my work's email.
