MWEB Fon Router DNS Setup

Hi DawieZA

Hi What router are you connecting to the Fon Router. I have set my non-Fon router to access point mode with custom DNS servers defined. Devices that connect to the non-Fon router still seem to set the Fon router as the primary DNS.

What do you mean when you say "and setting the WAN port to DHCP"?

I am able to set the DNS servers on most of my network clients but for my Chromecast. This is my problem child.

Thanks

Réghard

I have a WiFi router with an Ethernet WAN port (does not have a built-in ADSL modem). One of the configuration options for the WAN port is "Automatic Configuration - DHCP". If set to that I can connect the WAN port to an open Ethernet port on the Fon router and it will assign my WiFi router an IP address from the DHCP pool on the Fon router. Now seeing as the WAN port makes use of a NAT I can use a separate DHCP scope on my WiFi router where I can set an UnoTelly DNS server as my primary DNS.

Hope this helps answer your question.

Do you people not read?

Change it in your DHCP range, problem solved. Might also find that if you populate the PPPoE settings manually that the DNS might change to Cape Town.

But then I use international DNS servers anyway so it would never bother me.

I think YOU'RE the one not reading, mate.

I HAVE changed the DNS server in the DHCP pool, by clicking configure in the top right corner.

The router STILL identifies itself as the primary DNS, and lists the others sequentially AFTER itself. Have a look at the screenshots. If I DID do something wrong, please enlighten me, and others, with detailed instructions, rather than being condescending.

I see this basically as MWeb (which is owned by Naspers), trying to lock out users of services such as Unotelly.

Cos guess what? Naspers is the SAME company that owns?.......yep, MONOCHOICE, aka the Thieves at DSTV. Financially, Multichoice is probably losing THOUSANDS already, and it's only a matter of time before more people realise that R250 odd for Unotelly, Netflix and Hulu trumps the crap they're supplying at THREE times the price! Only issue I have is sport, but I can live without that.

I may be wrong, and I hope I am, but this smacks of corporate conspiracy!

This DNS limitation will discourage a lot of uptake for the Fon router

I've already disconnected mine, setup my old TrendNet faithful! I'll use the FON one as a backup for when (knock on wood), lighting strikes:)

I wonder if this happened with a firmware update.

Mine was working hundred percent with the DHCP change but now all of sudden I also get the router pushing itself as the primary DNS.

I simply updated it manually on the devices that need Unlocator so it's not too much a drama right now.

Has anyone noticed that the WPS functionality also stops working when you amend the default Wifi Network name and password. I changed my Wifi Network name from "MWEB_4CEC93" to my own name and password and now because the WPS no longer works, I can no longer program the repeater that came with it via WPS. I tried this serveral times by resetting the router and repeater back to default settings. I also could not configure the repeater via LAN, so I decided that it was too much work to get the repeater working and packed it away, so the fon range probably isn't what it is advertised in my immediate area.

I experienced the exact same syptoms that you described above, however i managed to overcome them.
I also noticed that the WPS functionality stoped working once i changed the wireless username and password. I then connected to the range extender via ethernet, at first i could not pick it so i swopped the ends of the cable around and then it worked. If i remember correctly the IP address of the repeater was 192.168.2.2, logged in with U/N 'admin' P/W '1234'. It displays the immediate wifi signals it picks up however it kept rejecting the password i had setup in the router and refused to connect. I eventually shortened the password and made it less complicated and that did the trick.

In the event that this still doesn't work, reset the repeater by holding in the WPS button on the repeater itself for approx 10-15 seconds, the power light should switch off briefly, then try plugging the ethernet cable back and check if you can connect to it then. The follow the route described in the first paragraph again.

The only other funtionatlity I wish they would add is mac-address filtering....
Hope this helps

I swapped out my FON router now back to my old linksys... the fact that the wan dns cannot be edited was a let down for me.

I finally connected my new router up last night.

One thing I noticed was an andriod device connected to my wi-fi network, I don't own a single android device.

I changed my SSID and password and the device was still connected. Anyone have a similar experience?

the device name listed was: android-46b99c76f9cd7a47

Samsung tv perhaps?

Yep, me too. Epic fail from mweb, but of course makes sense wrt streaming and competition for dstv.

Yup, same here buddy.

I don't only see one foreign device, i see atleast 8 unknown devices, and this is also after updating my SSID and password.
Actually meant to give mweb a call about this, i think it might be users connected to the @mweb FON SSID, but im not sure.

What's the IP address? It's probably just a device connected to the FON network.

But that would disappear once you changed the SSID, but the device list is populated historically.

Yes. It's exactly that.

The IP range is different if you look closely.

But if you change the SSID you no longer have a FON network.

Interesting, will give that a shot tomorrow and report back...

That never worked for me, chaging the SSID still maintained the 'MWEB FON' network on my side...

Guess i'm going to be abondoning the Router and just keep the extender...

But RICA demands this... why the surprise? All your online habits are dns and ip logged...

Just setup the DNS setting on the device you're using, eg: ps3, roku, Apple TV etc

Mweb Fon TG589vn v3 Manual DNS

Morning, we are aware of this issue and we have referred back to the vendor.

We hope to have this resolved in the near future.

Hi @Mweb Guy

Any news on the issues? Will be be able to use the hardware.

My TG589vn v3 is currently shelved until I am able to have control over the DNS server used.

I really love the Idea of shared WiFi and would love to participate in FON network.

Any other workarounds?

None of the ones mentioned in this post worked for me.

Thanks

Reghard

Afternoon Reghard, I've had many clients providing feedback that they are able to this.

I am liaising with a few Technicians to ascertain if this has been resolves via previous updates.
