Hi

So I received, the free Fon Router from MWEB.
Model is Technicolor TG589vn V3

Managed to setup up easily with my MWEB Account details, but problem is now changing the DNS on the router.

the router has quite a bit of functionality , tried to telnet into it , but keep on getting an error with invalid user. tried all combo's , admin ... etc, blank nothing works

reason for this is no DNS Changes allowed on Roku Box so has to be done on the router

Any Help, PM Me please as well

Thanks,

I was planning on retiring my current ADSL modem and separate Wi-Fi router running DD-WRT to only use the Technicolor router/modem. That was until I ran into the exact same DNS problem last night. I also have a Roku and make use of Unotelly. For this to work you must have a DHCP scope where you can change the DNS entries. At first I was hopeful as you can change the DHCP scope settings on the Technicolor router/modem. However even when changing the settings that reads "Primary DNS" the Technicolor router/modem overrides it and makes itself the primary DNS. So effectively you are changing the "Secondary DNS".

It is true that you can get around this by connecting via telnet and making the DNS change there but this only works on firmware not locked down as much as that supplied for MWEB's purposes. (the admin user is currently restricted from connecting via telnet from the LAN)

Hi all

You will not currently be able to change DNS setting on the Fon router.

Hi all

Thanks for confirming. I got around this by connecting my existing Wi-Fi router's WAN port to one of the LAN ports on the Fon router and setting the WAN port to DHCP. Now I run my Roku of the Wi-Fi with the Unotelly DNS setting and the rest of my devices of the Fon router's Wi-Fi. Everything works fine now and no need to make any modifications to the Fon router that might compromise the @MWEB FON SSID.

This DNS limitation will discourage a lot of uptake for the Fon router

Morning, we are aware of this issue and we have referred back to the vendor.

We hope to have this resolved in the near future.

I like using DSLStats and also using an alternative DNS. I see CLI interface is not available for telnet and admin. Is there any chance this will be enabled in future, else I may land out going back to my old router which was much more configurable.

I also had some issues with this router with my Unotelly service. First it looked like any DNS setting I set on my pc was being ignored:

Code:
C:\Windows\system32>nslookup
Default Server: myrouter.Home
Address:  fe80::9e97:26ff:fe8a:56d8

Mmm now why the hell is it doing that and where is that IPv6 DNS coming form cause I didnt set it. From "ipconfig":

Code:
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::9e97:26ff:fe8a:56d8%12
                                       196.46.185.44
                                       176.58.107.53

Turns out the router is giving that IPv6 DNS server to your pc/device and uses that.

2 Ways I found to fix it, one on PC and one one the router:

PC, disable IPv6 on your network connection:
ipv6.JPG

Second way on the router:

Disable stateless IPv6 server (also the DHCP ranges can be set below for the guy that asked)
interfaces.jpg
stateless.jpg

After:
Code:
C:\Windows\system32>nslookup
Default Server: 196-46-185-44.za-dns.com
Address: 196.46.185.44

**Ive only gotten this to work with manual DNS settings on the pc. If I set the DNS to DHCP it gets the router's IPv4 address (192.168.0.1 in my case) as the primary DNS. If someone can manage to just get that sorted it would be great!**

Hope this helps!!

Guys simply change this in the DHCP pool.

It's pretty simple and very straight forward as long as you look for the configure button top right.

Like I've told your Twitter team already, this is a non-issue.

Simply change DNS on the DHCP server, no need to do it on the PPPoE connection itself.

Works perfectly.

One minor irritation I found on my Technicolor TG589vn V3 automatic setup. The primary DNS is given as Joburg, but I'm based in Cape Town.

It only makes a small difference (30ms), but there seems to be no way to change this in the current script.

Do you people not read?

Change it in your DHCP range, problem solved. Might also find that if you populate the PPPoE settings manually that the DNS might change to Cape Town.

But then I use international DNS servers anyway so it would never bother me.

Tried that already as mentioned in the second post. The DHCP scope seems to have a hard coded primary DNS.

I'm using mine with Unlocator and no issues.

What are you trying to achieve?

I would like the DHCP server on the Technicolor router to assign my UnoTelly DNS address as the primary DNS for my network card. However even after editing the DHCP scope on the Technicolor router like below I still get the Technicolor router IP address as the primary DNS.

Okay I see mine does that as well, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

So probably just using it as a DNS cache because my Unlocator setup still works perfectly with Netflix and Hulu.

I tried playing around some more this morning but still no luck. My Roku and PC both use the Technicolor IP address as their primary DNS. Even tried flushing the DNS on my PC. Guess I will have to fiddle some more.

Luckily I have a second Wi-Fi router which I am using for DHCP on a separate SSID but having once device instead of two would be great.

WPS doesn't work properly.

Has anyone noticed that the WPS functionality also stops working when you amend the default Wifi Network name and password. I changed my Wifi Network name from "MWEB_4CEC93" to my own name and password and now because the WPS no longer works, I can no longer program the repeater that came with it via WPS. I tried this serveral times by resetting the router and repeater back to default settings. I also could not configure the repeater via LAN, so I decided that it was too much work to get the repeater working and packed it away, so the fon range probably isn't what it is advertised in my immediate area.
