MWEB Fon Router DNS Setup

Thanks Mweb Guy. If you could look into this further. It would be great to use dns to enable other services. Otherwise you might ve sending them out at loss to your company instead of all enjoying what could be an awesome service :)

Just logged onto the router and checked - DNS cannot be changed :(

Afternoon Reghard, I've had many clients providing feedback that they are able to this.

I am liaising with a few Technicians to ascertain if this has been resolves via previous updates.

Hi

Yes the firmware does give you the option to supply 2 alternative DNS servers. However the primary DNS servers used by clients that can not change their default DNS servers is still the MWEB DNS server.

Am I missing something?

Thanks for reply.

Morning Reghard

DNS changes on the FON router is possible. You can change it to your custom DNS settings. Bear in mind that this will impact on Google Cache, Akamai, etc.

Is it possible to start a PPPOE session yet?

I don't really care if it counts towards my threshold, I don't ever get there in any case. Gaming on uncapped just isn't good enough during normal hours. If I play at 3 in the morning it is fine though. I just want to be able to switch to a capped account for when I want to play.

Not quite.

Although you can change the DNS issued by the DHCP server it still provides it's own IP 192.168.1.1 first and then the two others that you have entered.

It's own internal DNS cache points to your MWEB Servers provided by the PPPoE connection.

Therefore it's a futile effort to make those changes as anyone who needs to use services like OpenDNS and the like can't because all devices are still chatting to the Mweb servers and only if those aren't available (which hopefully never happens) would the others fall into place for failover.

So yes the option is there...but it doesn't work as expected.

It would be much simpler to simply change it at the PPPoE account level.

You mean using the FON Router as a bridge? Pretty sure I used it like that.

Thanks for confirming. I got around this by connecting my existing Wi-Fi router's WAN port to one of the LAN ports on the Fon router and setting the WAN port to DHCP. Now I run my Roku of the Wi-Fi with the Unotelly DNS setting and the rest of my devices of the Fon router's Wi-Fi. Everything works fine now and no need to make any modifications to the Fon router that might compromise the @MWEB FON SSID.

I also did this and it worked perfectly until Sunday. All of a sudden the Fon router will not give an IP address to the WAN port of my existing router. I used my old modem with my existing router, and no issue. But if I connect my desktop directly to the Fon router, I get internet access. Not sure what is happening, will try to figure it out tonight

Sorry to bring this up but I bought my Chromecast about 2 weeks ago and am still not able to connect it to my MWEB router. Have you guys managed to successfully change your DNS settings on this router to enable you to use your Chromecast with Unotelly?

Like I said somewhere else on this forum, I struggled with the FON router for a week before I lost patience and returned it to MWEB. Fortunately they didn't bill me. Basically the router is locked and you can't change the DNS settings, like others said even if you manage that it will by default point to the MWEB IPs. I'm still with my Telkom-branded Netgear router and it works fine for me with Netflix, Hulu and Spotify.

Well with some tweaking and firnware updates this is totally possible.

Once you can Ssh to the router its realy quite a powerfull device!

Sorry if this is annoying as its an old thread, but I was able to change the DNS servers.
First I flashed the firmware to non MWeb firmware (I used this guide and it worked down to the letter, except for some post firmware install configuration that is resolved in the comments section), SSH into it, type menu, then dns->server -> forward -> dnsset (you can then go list to see the currently used DNS servers) -> flush.
This will remove the ISP DNS servers. Then go to add.

use set=0, metric=0, intf=Internet, dns=UnoTelly DNS server IP. Leave everything else blank.
Do this for both IP addresses (primary and secondary).
Then keep selecting Cancel until you are out of the menu and type saveall.

You don't need a restart. I havent checked if the ISP DNSs will be re-added automatically if you restart the router.

Note that flashing non MWeb firmware will remove FON access.

My chromecast still isn't working with Netflix ATM, not sure why. My phone and PC both work without any local DNS configuration, so perhaps the chromecast is using Google's own DNS servers. I think a VPN used on a router may be the solution, but I don't think this router supports that.

OK, so I had a power blackout and my router restarted and everything worked fine!
I checked and what happened is that the MWeb DNSs where added upon restart but they where added after the UnoTelly DNSs, so the latter had priority.

Secondly, I got my chromecast to work by setting a static route it the router to redirect Google DNS traffic to my router's local IP.
I just used this guide, but instead of Telnet, I just SSHd into it and used the menu command like above and found the menu items that matched the names of the commands and parameters in the guide.

So it seems I got the MWeb Technicolor TG587n v3 to do everything I wanted it to do! However its no longer MWeb, but I wasn't using FON that much anyway. Perhaps one day I can re-implement a non MWeb FON manually, since I know that the router can do FON.

Hi there, I know this is a very old post, but I just experienced the same problem. Since I have changed my SSID and password to my own ones, the wifi printer does not get picked up by any PC on the network and none of the devices on my network can see each other (PING not getting through), but Internet is working fine and they all have IP's in the correct range and I can see them from the router's admin page. BTW also have 2 of those unknown android devices connected, and tried deleting them, but no luck. I think one of them at least is the FON part of the router. I am no techy, so can anyone help me with a not too technical answer on how to fix this? biggest problem is the wifi printer (Canon i-sensys) not working.

Hi LEMONZ

Have you perhaps tried our ADSL support team?

http://www.mweb.co.za/aboutus/contact-us

Hi there,
yes I did and at first he said he cannot help me, because it is outside the scope of the support team, but then he did try a few things, but did not manage to help.

Morning LEMONZ, please provide me your MWEB account details via private messaging.
