MWEB Gaming Feedback

Hi Will.
I'm a Mweb Uncapped 4096k user.
I usually play Call of Duty 4 (Local Servers), CoD Modern Warfare 2 (P2P based) and Need For Speed World (Europe Server).
Over the last week, my latency have not been good at all.

In CoD4 my pings are +-150ms where as it usually was 30-60ms (SGS; WAGE; IGame - servers).
When I play Modern Warfare 2, the match making system would automatically make me host (because of the 4mbps line I have) and then the other players would complain of the lag.

On Need For Speed World, you often would feel the delay, but that is obviously due to the distance.
Before I enter a game, I stop ALL my Downloads and kill all application processes that is using internet.

I'm situated on the South Coast of KZN.

Thanks for doing this for the Gaming customers ;)

Ok let's tackle one problem at a time :) Can you show me some traces to the WAGE and igame servers when you're experiencing the problem so that I can get an idea of where in the route the latency picks up.

Yes I am a fulltime raider on the EU servers in one of the top guilds on my realm. So latency is a big factor for me.

Just a heads up, logged on to WoW now to do Coren Direbrew daily dungeon, lagged out in Dalaran and logged back on with 17412ms latency. (21:20 - Friday Night).

Here are the results of the traceroute:

Finally - managed to get a group for the 5 man dungeon, was extremely laggy with about 5-10 second delay! Luckily the fight didnt last long so I completed the daily.

Hope this helps!

I game online and pull demos on Playstation 3. It has been really great so far with low latencies but the last few days I have been having issues. It's not as fast as usual. But generally if it can get back to what it was a before these last 2 or so days I cannot be happier with the service. And this is on MWEB uncapped 4MB! :D
I'm in Cape Town.

Hi Will,

Just got back from the long weekend and I can't log into Eve online, it hangs on "Aquiring bulk data" which is normally a quick 2-3 sec process ( a synch download from their side I'm assuming to ensure client is correct, not a large download in any way). Any answers for me?

*EDIT* NVM, just took a long time to log in :(

I'm not a gamer, but I noticed tha latency to Europe via SEACOM has spiked this evening (Sun 26th), and is currently running close to 400ms. There seems to be some upstream congestion (perhaps SEA-ME-WE-4 again?)

This route to the BBC (UK) seems to be worse than other areas in Europe and the US:

If you check the eve forums, lots of people all over the world were having this problem, including me. Being patient solved the issue.

ccp again :( I avoid eve forums like the plague especially COAD, too much chest beating wannebe's.

@ronald911.

In both cases I can't see anything from an MWEB point of view that we could address. Hops 3-5 where your traffic passes onto and then off our IPC network look healthy enough. On the Igame one you can see that there is an increase in latency between jinx and iburst, which would most likely impact on all non-iburst clients connecting to those servers.

Are these traces done at a time when you are experiencing a problem, or is this intermittent?

Thanks for that feedback pmurgs.

Eve would also have been positively affected by the behavioral download change we made last week, I tested the exact issue you're describing with another customer on Wednesday.

Confirmed this morning that his Eve is now running fine.

Hi Will.

Thanks for the response. It usually happens from time to time. As I said not something permanent - It's just some of the days, that it get real bad.
Over the weekend my gaming was really smooth, so had nothing to complain about :D.
I'm happy :)

Thanks

@ronald Glad to hear that :) I've been thinking about taking a look at COD myself, but I will probably wait for Black Ops to come out. The next time you do experience a problem take a look at the traces again and you should generally be able to see on which hop the latency increases.

If we dont get a local server for black ops.... then its going to be pointless to even buy the game!

Hi Will,

Could you explain the high latencies lately on the WoW EU servers? I usealy got like 280 to 350ms, now i get 400 to 600ms for some reason?

Thanks.

I haven't confirmed this yet, but I think we might be picking up some international latency due to the fact that we are in mid-upgrade and there is additional international capacity that needs to be brought online. I'm told that this should be in place early in October so lets see how it looks then.

Odd, my WoW went from it's usual 600-700 down to 350ish this weekend, the best I've ever had on a non-WebAfrica account..

Ohwell, I'll hold thumbs and hope for the best, I'm liking the ongoing changes.

Thanks :) hope they will solve it, i did love the low latency first, but now its abit frustrating.

Thanks for making this thread Will.
Steam still seems to be suffering from login and game launching issues while on a MWEB account though but glad to see that you are looking into the issue.

Mweb was better over the weekend for wow, but again today its just bad, 800+ ms. Now i understand stuff cant be changed for the sake of gaming to negatively effect the other users, but i really wanna know whats going on. Thing is, it was fine, it was awesome, now every second day im struggling with insane latency. Could someone please help or just give an answer as to what is going on. It was fine, now its not, hasnt been for about 2-3 weeks now.

Does it have something to do with the upgrade or is this just the way its going to be "shaped" or whatever the word for it is?

Sorry guys if i come off as a bit rude, just would like a response to it, cause i really want to sort out my ISP before the wow expansion or the new patch hits :(
I do understand that every network goes down sometimes of has a rough patch, but i really want to know whats going on ! Been on mweb uncapped 384 since its launch and honestly i dont want to change ISP's, the latency has been horrible for 2-3 weeks now thou, so i would just like to know whats going on.

Regards, Wessel
