MWEB Gaming Feedback

They are obviously shaped, but given priority over other shaped protocols.
In other words, a best delivery service. They won't be shaped to the extent that torrents would be (except for the last few days lol) but also don't expect unshaped traffic when the proverbial stuff hits the fan (as in the last few days).

For someone that asks the "difficult" questions, you surely don't look for the answers provided beforehand. Of course, I understand what you are trying to do, to get the black and white definitive answer so you can hold the answer to anything that goes wrong in the future and say "BUT YOU SAID THIS EARLIER". And yes, you are entitled to ask as you are a paying customer. Perhaps you won't get the answer you want from the person you are asking though.

I'm asking because there have been different responses to the same question from Mweb. That makes "looking for the answers" a bit of a fruitless exercise.
If he refuses or gives us the run-around again, then we can draw our own conclusions.

1. Are games SHAPED/UNSHAPED?

Well it doesnt really matter surely, as long as a game is playable which is what the issue here - as far as WoW is concerned at least.

Lounger my intention is certainly not to give you the run around, I simply don't want to be drawn into an ultimately fruitless debate.

I've provided an extensive and technically accurate explanation as to how we prioritize traffic on our network and where gaming traffic sits on that scale.

The priority of all traffic is in some way affected by the prioritizing of certain traffic types and the active shaping of others, this stands to reason as there is a finite amount of bandwidth on the network.

However there is a distinct technical difference between traffic which is not actively managed and therefore allowed to contend freely on the network and that which is actively shaped. So I will therefore continue to refer to this as unshaped traffic going forward and I would suggest to you, as I did to LikeItIS, that we can agree to disagree on this point.

Kind Regards
Will

Will, having ruled out shaping, what is the next step? Could it be something that Telkom has slapped onto your IPC, since it is not affecting other ISP accounts?

Also Will, with it being time based i.e. after 6pm and before 8am - which would indicate a rule change on the mweb network of some description, as you indicated the traffic shaper is not the issue, what else could it be?

At this point I'd really be speculating until I get some feedback from our engineers. I checked international latency on our testbench just before leaving the office at around 19h20 and everything looked very healthy end to end. (I can't trust my own readings as I have severe Telkom latency on my personal line right now). What is the experience like tonight?

Well I'm logged into Guild Wars right now and my average ping is 25000ms, so not good.

Still unplayable. Instead of embarking on a WoW raid, my gamers are playing Runescape.

Still horrible downloads, international still bad, WoW latency still crappy.

Was on the phone this afternoon with one of the Techs, says they have to escalate to the Network engineers

Still unplayable. No change from the last few days, although at 8:00am exactly I'll be able play WoW - pity about having to hold down a job.

I think if you scrutinize the rather obscure replies from our Mweb 'experts', you can see that they 'allocate' a very small amount of bandwidth to online games, and then it gets hit quite heavily by contention (too many people using a small quantity). Just another way of shaping, or even throttling if you ask me.

duud, can you leave this post please coz u are trolling, u are not contributing in ANY way to help solve this problem....lemme fix it for u....cancel ur MWEB account and go to axxess or some other crappy ISP, but please stop trolling...

Major lag still being experienced in WoW on Monday evening after 6pm and Tuesday morning before 7am.

what i've noticed is that wow uses random ports in the 49000 range. so what ever policy that kicks in after 6 is affecting that port range. hope we can get this resolved soon. only recently started playing wow. and must say im enjoying it stack. dont wanna go back to BC2 :-(

Had lag once again last night in wow 2000+ latency with increase of bad spikes, imediate swiched to another ISP and got 200ms smoothly, whats the point having mweb uncapp but need to use another account to play games? Or is mweb just there for us to use for downloading no gaming...

can you guys ping the servers when you get the lag spikes?
and if so what does your replies look like?

I must say I have been lucky (although it may just be the game)
I play Lotro and haven’t had issues but I want to get Guildwars2 when it comes out
so I hope it won't have problems

Hi Everyone

The engineers made some changes this morning to give increased priority to gaming traffic. Please let me know if there is any change in your experience tonight.

Kind Regards
Will

shot will. in IT myself. so i know where you coming from. these sort of problems can only get resolve with trail and error troubleshooting. will test it when i get home 2nite. :-)
