MWEB Gaming Feedback

As Will said in an earlier post, it is a WoW problem. You are focusing on the fact that at 6PM it all goes to hell. Of course it does, the uncapped product is shaped, it was shaped before Blizzard changed the way traffic is handled in game. Unfortunately, that is most likely the main cause of our latency issues, as we know MWEB is shaping the hell out of P2P traffic.

Does this make it MWEBs problem though? Not quite. Their product hasn't changed, in fact they were implementing better shaping rules for gaming traffic when Blizzard dropped this on our laps. Despite Will's best efforts, we have to wait for Blizzard to come up with their solution instead of expecting ISPs (local and international ones, including Virgin Media and O2 which are huge) to shake up their entire network for a game. It sucks, but unfortunately there is no way for them to differentiate Blizz P2P and normal P2P.

Has any one contacted blizzard to come have a read here? Maybe they can tell Mweb what they did and Mweb can use the info to unblock them some how.
I have no choice left, but what other ISP has uncapped for a 384kps line with good 300-400ms under R300?

I'm even willing to pay Mweb R300 bucks pm just to have a account,(I pay for DLS+wow time) if they can BLOCK all torrents etc from my account and just let me wow, dam man it's all I do... my hobby grrr. You Tube sucks and FB is like a few mb, torrents are boring.

This is taking just to long. So is there no way to tell the difference between wow's data and p2p etc. Do they not get tagged in the packets?
How does my computer know what the packets are for and from then but not Mweb's server??
Really how can windows know where the packets are coming from and for what they are but not the ISP's server -_-

Thanks Steven.

Piet I understand your frustration with this, believe me it's been pretty frustrating from my point of view as well, I spoke to our networks team again today and we will have to adopt a similar approach to Virgin's now and take this up with the vendors for our traffic management solution. In terms of understanding why this is only affecting MWEB consider the fact that we are the only ISP in South Africa with a network built specifically to cater for a consumer grade uncapped offering. It's quite likely that our traffic management solutions are similar to the likes of those employed by Virgin and other affected ISPS.

Regarding the 6pm factor as I've said before this is actually the time of day that shaping becomes more relaxed so even if there was a portion of WoW traffic that's being shaped it should be worse during business hours, not better. I have also seen mention of an early evening, or primetime element to the symptoms being experienced by many of the posters on the Blizzard forums so please keep that in mind as well.

Between this issue and the cutting of the transit links this is turning into quite a frustrating patch for our gaming customers, but there are also some very interesting things happening and there is a definite feeling within the business that getting gaming right is a priority for us. Unfortunately as with many good things they just don't happen overnight.

Sooo... our best bet is to A: wait for blizzard or B: mweb to fix this? to think i was on the damn telephone all day thinking it was telkom >_< Urgh... is there anyway we can get a ETA from mweb? cause i dont want to pay for wow time and not be able to actually play it...

For those that missed it, there is a temporary solution, it costs about R50 p/m. Its called BattlePing and it completely bypasses any WoW related shaping from ISPs, I can confirm this works for MWEB issues. There is also a trial, so you can give it a spin and see if it resolves your problems.

reduce your lagg , proxy should work also its kind of free , i use it with my 3g, waiting to for line to be activated so i can test it with mweb.

reduce your lagg gives 30 day trail, but you apply for another trail on another email address when its done lol

Although blackhand and hereticangel have both suggested good ideas / programs ( i tested battleping it works, ill test "reduce the lag" later) id still prefer if there was another fix that doesnt involve a 3de party program :/ but hopefully if more isp are having the diffucutlly blizzard might be forced into changing the whole melarky... but... then again im just being overly hopefull...

Ok well due to the stupid transit cuts between telkom and mweb(mweb's move) i can't play on local servers now and niether can anyone else.... this is utter bs....

Stop telling us its a Blizzard problem, because its not, just unblock your ports that needs to be unblocked and we are good to go!, Perhaps call Telkom or WebAfrica to help you unblock whats blocked because i dont have any issues with them playing wow.

4 Weeks now and still counting with uber latency problems on mweb!

No wow issues here. The odd dc when I log in now and then, but that is likely on my side.

Tried @dslmweb instead of @mweb? When I have issues that usually sorts things out for me.

Does this actually have any effect on your internet connection? I can't imagine that they would have two different sets of shaping rules depending on what your username is.

It's most likely just the result of reconnecting to the internet that's making you feel like there has been a change in your connection speed/responsiveness.

If you remove the dsl from your username it puts you on the saix network. Well it used to when seacom was down.

You seriously don't want them to block torrents, thats how you get your patch data! And it is part of the WoW traffic so it will go from unplayable to ummm...unplayable? :P

What I am finding works well at the moment is an AxxessLite account, R19 a GB and because WoW traffic is minimal it doesn't burn through it quickly.

If this holds up for much longer, I might switch to another ISP. As much as I love MWEB, I don't see the point of paying for something I can't use, which for me is playing WoW in a hardcore raid guild 5 nights a week.

Let's see what this morning's rolling restart brings, hopefully a hotfix.

No it makes no difference anymore, the only thing that it does do is as 7th day suggested give you a fresh connection and it's a quick way to ensure that you get issued with a new IP.

I've posted here about how bad my lag is, but to be honest, apart from the occasional lag spike, I've been playing wow with very little issue for the last 2 weeks. I won't say I've got the best latency (usually 600-800ms), but honestly, I've been playing with that latency for 3 years now. Now I've got a 384 uncapped, and both my son and I play wow on it. I live on the East Rand, so I don't know if it makes a difference. I play every night, and we did an ICC raid this past weekend, and we had almost no issues, so can we honestly say it's MWeb if not all MWeb users have an issue?

Just a thought, but since Telkom own all telephone lines and exchanges, is it not even slightly possible that THEY might be doing something?

@BluStorm. Thanks thats useful feedback and it interesting to see that from what seemed to be a widespread problem we are now getting reports from more than one customer who originally had the problem that they are no longer experiencing issues.

I'd also like to hear some conclusive feedback please from users who have actually tried the MTU workaround and what results it gave them. It seems that there are mixed reports of what value to use, I've hear 900, 960 and 1000 all quoted as numbers that have worked so it's most likely some trial and error is required. Mine has been set to 1000 since the weekend and I've seen no adverse effects from the change.

I haven't changed my MTU settings. Default XP x64 settings.

Here's one for you guys to think about:

A mate and I have both started playing WoW a couple week ago, and much to our dismay, we found the lag unplayable (often between 4000 and 12000 ms). we're on the same router in the same room, both connecting to a 4mb Mweb ADSL shaped uncapped line (the R900 a month one).

A few nights back, I found this thread, and after some heavy reading i found the whole DrTCP fix. we both grabbed the app and both changed our MTU to 1400, at which point nothing happened. Then 960 was thrown around, so it tried it, and lo and behold, I've not seen my lag go higher than 650ms since. On the other hand, my buddy is till rocking the awful latencies we both had before, and the only major difference is that before we did the MTU fix i bought the game and started using my free month. He is still screwing around with a trial account (but is going to activate tomorrow probz).

any thoughts?

The MTU did not work for me tried a whole bunch, till I had turned of window scaling, set the TTL to 30, Set max cons per server to 30, set Set max cons per server 1_0 to 30.
I enabled TcpFrequency, TCPNoDelay & TcpAckTicks.
My ms shows as 1.4k still but* I'm playing so smooth in fact it feels like I have 0 delay O_o...

So thank you Mweb guy for giving us a program to "quick fix" our wow.

I think I'll stay with Mweb! ^_^ thx to will!

Any tips on Finding the magic MTU, the only down side with this setup I made is the "now and then packet loss" which you don't really notice. Now I don't dc from the game any more at least :)
