MWEB Gaming Feedback

@ WILL

For some reason PS3's in Cape Town seem to have very poor internet speeds over the last few weeks (last night was all but impossible - couldn't browse using the built in browser, PS Store extremely slow, login to PS Network times out, etc)

I am on a 4 meg line, no proxy defined, using OpenDNS

PS3 connected via LAN cable to router, great download speeds from PC (YouTube has however also been temperamental) and Ubuntu updates are also rather slow for a 4 meg line).

Im in durban and yesterday i just couldnt log into psn at about 5.30, on sunday it was flying though, downloaded pac man dx pretty quickly.

Well here's a new problem for ya. When trying to run the Minecraft.exe to download the files it requires to play, the download gets stuck at the 'Done Loading' part or it gets a black screen. I've followed the support given on the Minecraft forums to no avail. I then switch over to an Axxess 1GB prepaid account and guess what, the game works. So is Mweb messing around with the Minecraft download signatures?

The thing that really, really irritates me about this problem is that you start "ripping and replacing" 'cos you don't know what the cause of the problem is - is it the router, did the DNS suddenly go funny, did the cat chew the LAN cable - so you go into your setup, you run the tests, IP obtained - yes; internet ok - yes; PSN login - failed, aargh - try again, PSN login pass, then upload / download speed fails....aaaaaaarrrghhhh. Then you start rebooting router, unplug cable, reboot PS3 - I'm getting heat prickles just writing about it.

steam is down for some users, even non mweb users cant get in, though some guys can get in, i was in last night while some was not

The point he's trying to make is that not everyone's net is broken, although he's in Cape Town aswell, who knows how this could help Will, but atm, it might in some way.

no that is not the point because he has posted this about 20 times already.........and AND we all know this issue gets resolved with a proxy........

so no helpful info and thus he is trolling....

There really shouldn't be any reason for this, I sat in on a meeting with the gamezone admins yesterday and PS3 was one of the discussion points as there have been a few questions around this. The general consensus from the PS3 owners present is that they're not experiencing any issues, other than those that might relate to Telkom peering. We did have some problems with youtube recently, we lost connectivity to google caching a day or two back and this had to be temporarily redirected. This has a lot of focus from the networks team at the moment and there are a few initiatives underway to make things more robust in that area. I'm concerned if you say your Ubuntu updates are also running slowly as it's starting to sound like you may have a more general issue. Have you checked signal strength on your line, or if there are any signs of congestion, or the line running errors?

Also I'm not sure what your reasons are for using OpenDNS, but it would be preferable if you made use of the MWEB DNS servers, at very least while troubleshooting.

Kind Regards
Will

Steam is logging in fine here - I tested yesterday when we had several complaints about this and was able to log in on both mweb and non-mweb accounts. I did notice that the friends portion of the client seemed to be down in both cases. Can I just ask as a general point please guys, that we try and keep this discussion on the MWEB gaming experience and that you assist in this by doing your homework and preliminary troubleshooting to ensure that we are discussing an MWEB specific problem when you table it here.

Thanks for the feedback.

2. OpenDNS: Mostly using this for the blocking facilities - i.e. to ensure that kids don't inadvertently stumble upon undesirable sites. Also received feedback from other users that OpenDNS works better with PS3.

3. Signal Strength:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 512 kbps
Line Attenuation 36.0 db 20.0 db
Noise Margin 13.9 db 13.0 db

Once again, thanks for the feedback.

Hops 9 and 10 highlight where you leave SA and arrive on the London end of Seacom, from there you are picking quite a bit of latency to your final destination, not much to be done about that I'm afraid. However I thought that by slowness you meant download speeds?
