MWEB Gaming Feedback

I'd appreciate if you could look into the Rift situation too please. Getting massive lag ranging anywhere between 20k-200k ms during the shaping hours of p2p. I believe they're using port range 6000-6100 atm but they do keep adjusting this from time to time so I'll try find some solid evidence of this.

Thanks

Glad I'm not the only one. Never in my life have I seen a ping like that.

Re: Rift

Found a thread on the Trion forums saying that people should use their firewall/routers to block port 6520 which should then force the game to connect through port 80. Must say I was able to play a Warfront at this time of the day with 0 lag, maybe a coincidence, but time will tell. I'll keep Rift users updated.

That possible fix wasn't much of a success during business hours at least. I blocked ports 6520-6540 which forced the game through port 80 yet I still had suffered through periods of extreme latency.

All server however seem to be from the same ip range as www.riftgame.com, which is 193.105.173.xxx, would this be at all possible for you guys at MWEB to give priority to this range for gaming purposes? I assume it seems like p2p from your end.

Hi Gents

Apologies for being MIA for the last couple of days, I was the victim of a germ warfare attack :)

I see quite a number of questions coming up about Rift. If someone playing it would be kind enough to volunteer their MWEB username to me in a PM so that I can monitor some traffic and see what the traffic manager is classifying it as then we can take it from there.

Beanbag I'm glad to hear that you've made some progress with your issues, in terms of the difference between shaped and unshaped I would have to say at this point with WoW that if there is any difference then it is marginal.

Unshaped customers obviously enjoy the benefits of a lower contention ratio and effectively should be able to 'floor it' on any activity they may be engaged in.

On the flipside however the policies that we currently have in place on our shaped products are effectively designed to provide an appropriate level of QoS to sensitive traffic, with real time applications like gaming and voice and video sitting at the top of the list and P2P sitting at the bottom.

Well Axxess failed me as well...went back to MWEB with a promising 180ms but that lagged out as well.

Afrihost may set me straight with their free gig account xD

I definitely don't think 384k is fine for raiding anymore >.<

Hi Steven

I wish there was a way for us to give you a temporary speed bump so that you can test the difference, unfortunately line speed changes are not all that dynamic. If it would be at all possible for you to take your setup to somewhere with a faster line I could give you a temporary speed boost on your MWEB account so that you can do a proper comparison.

Hi I have been MIA as well because of moving house.

Won't be raiding tonight and I won't be able to go to a faster line speed location (don't know anyone lol).

However I shall monitor the latencies (I am no longer on Clareinch, I have moved to Plumstead so things will be different!).

Thanks for your concern Will, wish I could do more from my side to check it out. I just think that some fights will always be the bane of a 384k raider when it comes to really spammy parts of the fight.

Just for interests sake, my new SNR and line attenuation stats:

Line Attenuation: 39DB down, 12DB up.
Noise Margin: 14DB down, 23DB up.

Are those stats any good or rubbish? :P

that decent . nothing to worry about on stats size

though 14db is not allot for a 384, maybe getter another router later on :)

I'm sending you a PM with something you might be interested in Those numbers look in the right range, but if you send me your new number in the reply I'll have a proper look at the line conditions.

I'm still amazed that mweb is dropping traffic to their own steam content server making it impossible to launch games through steam

Lobesy I don't have anyone else reporting an experience like this, there must be something specific to your situation that's causing the problem.

Good morning Rift players

Just to let you know that our networks team implemented a traffic signature update for me this morning which should now have Rift being classified correctly as gaming traffic. If you are using the Trion workaround that forces the traffic through Port 80 then I would recommend that you disable this as it may break the classification.

Please let me know if you have any further issues with this and thanks to bradrap for assisting us with obtaining a traffic sample :)

Hi guys, how is the WoW situation in the Durban region on MWeb? When I left I was getting 3K spikes, is there now a SAT3 for Durbs like CT got?

Many thanks for this - ping is now ridiculously low and stable. I completely forgot to check back here after asking for Rift to be prioritised - was a pleasant surprise coming back and seeing it already done.

I love hearing about ridiculously low pings :) Any feedback for us about what this game is like, how does it compare to WoW?

Hi OtakuD

Durban users are still routing via our JHB IPC node on Seacom, but our network is constantly undergoing improvements. Why don't you check in with our sales team and ask them to arrange one of our try before you buy accounts for you? That way you can test the experience without spending any money :)

Hi Redeemer.

Obviously your line quality is a factor as well.

Personally I play on a 4mb shaped account and my home latency seldom goes over 200ms. World can range between 170-400ms although it seldom reaches the top end of that scale. If that isn't good enough for you our Gamesmaster has just made an incredible deal with WTFast and we will be making free WTFast accounts available to all our hardcore MMO players to help you squeeze out those last few milliseconds :)

Hi Will

Sounds good currently playing on a WA trail account and am getting 170-200ms no tunneling or services.

But will give mweb a go for sure and a free wtfast account would be a deal closer for me :)
Thanks
