Mweb Kill Torrents completely during office hours

I have a 10mb uncapped adsl line with mweb. I have noticed the last few weeks that Im unable to download movies roughly during the periods of 8am to about 10pm. I called mweb and was told that management have made a blanket call to throttle all users because of the indiscretion of the few that abuse the system.

Throttle is an understatement. They are completely dead.

I fall well within their AUP and yet Im throttled. Or perhaps movie downloads fall outside of their AUP? I appreciate that movie downloads are not priority.

What is annoying is that I have to pay R1360 per month to be treated and punished like a school kid because my buddy farted in class.

If you do a search here on mybb, you'll discover that mweb are not the most popular ISP around here for a good reason.

Netflix isn't available in SA either so not sure I'd call that legal either.

I hope that comment is tounge in cheek - there are thousands of TBs of daily legal torrent traffic. It is a fundamental system for Linux distribution, never mind freeware/backup software etc. etc.

The problem isn't Mweb's shaping. It's the fact that Mweb is your ISP.

You are indeed correct. Even games like World of Tanks and the like rely on p2p update distribution.

No its a system of servers hosted by either ISPs or Valve themselves. Runs over port 80 HTTP (uses a proprietary format though).

In SA & UK:

I have no problem with torrents being throttled / shaped during business hours.

My internet at work is slow enough- when I work from home it's a little better - less contention.

Torrents are not a time-critical application- I can live with setting them to download overnight, when bandwidth is more available, especially on a home account...

Yes in this particular case it was a movie. It was a free independent movie:wtf:. I probably should have used the word "torrent". I also use torrents for software updates and linux distributions, free books and tons of other free stuff which I then cannot download at all when i need to download them. Mweb dont just shape torrents they kill them completely .

Its not a big issue for me, can i wait till morning yes i can. Its just the way mweb go about it. Blanket "punishment" that's a bit annoying. Especially since I fall well within the AUP of my product. Yet I get shaped to death because of someone else.

Nothing you mention is unique to MWEB, it's the route all ISPs are going. There is no such blanket punishment or being shaped to death because of someone else. I'm not a downloader, but I'm certainly more a fan of throttling than shaping. These are, after all, home uncapped accounts. If you want to torrent during the day during the work week, you'll need a business uncapped account.
