The issue of our shaping policies has been raised a few times, and the question asked as to whether or not we throttle line speeds to curb downloads. I’d just like to clear this up for everyone. MWEB doesn’t throttle line speeds. Our Uncapped ADSL plans are exactly that, Uncapped. And they’ll remain so! We are, however, constantly monitoring the performance of our network to give you guys a top quality service. From time to time we uncover a small number of users that aren’t using the service within our Acceptable Use Policy. This isn’t fair to the majority of our customers as the usage patterns of this group can have a detrimental impact on network performance for everyone. We take the impact that this minority has on the whole user-base very seriously. If a customer is not playing fairly they will be asked to move to a product better suited to their usage needs so that they don’t impact on the enjoyment of everyone else. Here’s to a free, fair and enjoyable web for all!

Kind Regards
MWEB Operations

Why not just shape whatever they are using to make them comply with the Acceptable Use Policy (not impact the majority of other users) as well as offering them to buy a product suited for their needs?

so what is considered fair, 20gb, 100gb ?? Why cant these guys say, if you use more than xx gb, we will ask you to leave, not be airey fairy about it all ??

Then we might as well go capped again then

:-) I just want to know what they mean by "If a customer is not playing fairly they will be asked to move to a product better suited to their usage needs" the product is marked as UNCAPPED, by them saying "If a customer is not playing fairly they will be asked to move to a product better suited to their usage needs" means that it is not really UNCAPPED.

I enjoy my "UNCAPPED" but my speeds suck at the moment and I am wondering if it is because of the Seacom issue or because of MWEB considering me as not playing fairly?

:-)

Here we go again.

Please define what is considered 'playing fairly'.

I pay a 1000 bucks a month for this service. For me 300 Gb a month is fair.

define "playing fairly" in terms of gb.
Someone asked MWEB the same question on their Facebook wall. The answer was quite revealing.

See below:

You don't throttle because you don't need to. When your product is working, the shaping is so aggressive, so often that it isn't necessary. I would like you to put a figure on the shaping and stick to it. We are seeing some very wild swings in impact, it's sometimes hard to recognise it's the same package we bought.

Also, at what point do you ask your customers to move to a different product? The last time I looked, the AUP didn't have ANY reference to uncapped at all.
Rudi Jansen
Noel our adsl T&C have an entire section on AUP. The shaping is dynamic so there is not a fixed number I can give you.

Based on your repeated comments I really want to know which ISP you work for?

I would also like a plain as day GB guideline to work with.

As far as I understand the term UNCAPPED, it means you are allowed to transfer an unlimited amount of data.

I also live on planet earth and I understand the cost structure of the uncapped offering can not support a large number of users transferring exorbitant numbers of data.

So... I only ask for a straight answer:
What is the per user threshold that is considered "fair use". IN GIGABYTES PER MONTH.

I also foresee the reluctance in providing this answer. If there are 5000 users with 4mbs uncapped on the network and they KNOW that the threshold is 350GB, most users will use pretty much 350GB per month.
However, if there are some users who think the fair usage policy suggests 20GB is the threshold, they won't venture too far over that.

But... where does that leave us as customers who are told "We can take your internet away if we decide you've been internetting too much"? Especially since exactly R589 leaves my account every month on exactly the 30th?
Can we get a straight answer so WE CAN MAKE OUR OWN DECISION on which products we CHOOSE to purchase. Please!

Come guys... not too much to ask?

I think they are not going to mention a number because it is irrelevant, taking steps to avoid their shaping is probably regarded as abuse. The download heavy protocols are put on a low priority so there is no way to "abuse" them. They will always get the "leftovers" on the network. This infatuation with "Gigs" is irrelevant, once the network is at their designed user capacity, downloads will simply slow to a crawl and only speed up at times when the network is free. This ensures the profitable users are not disadvantaged by the download whores.

I'm currently downloading at 0.2kB/s on my MWEB uncapped 384 account. Thanks MWEB, I'm so happy I moved over to your uncapped accounts that I could just schit...

Mm do any of you guys actually use MWEB accounts? Their acceptable use policy says things like you can't run a server or share your account with people. THATS what they mean by abuse, not how much data you transfer. They're not one of the other ISP's (read: crooks) that sell you a capped account as uncapped. Although I'm only on a 384 account, it's been running at full speed all the time, except for the Seacom outages.. Just freakin phone them and ask if it's ok to leave your downloads running 24/7 and they will tell you that yes, they dont mind, and won't throttle you!

You do know Seacom is down right?

Yes, but it won't stop me bitching about their lack of foresight, considering they're supposedly the largest ISP in SA. The majority of their clients have absolutely no idea about MWEB's lack of redundancy. Nor does it form a part of the buying decision. Nor should it, to be honest...

The SEACOM problem has not been fully fixed, but their capacity is back, so we shouldn't be seeing any problems or reductions in speed and so on.

You're joking, right? I use about a 1/3 of that in 3.5 months.
