MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

Different strokes. IMO someone paying R1000 a month for 30 gigs must be joking (or crazy).

I was tired of topping up, but you might be right. I don't think I need so much. Having said that, the performance is better than my Telkom. Oh well...

300GB makes me realize how out of touch I am. I am a product of Telkom brainwashing. LOL :D

"Uncapped" means not having to see how much you can download each month :)

but mr mweb your advert told me to "use as much data as I want"

T&C always apply. Always. I think the text at the end of the TV ads included wording to this effect.

Use as much as you want. Just don't break the T&C. Don't run a server for commercial purposes on a non-commercial account. Don't download in such a way as to circumvent shaping. Etc. Basically, don't break the T&C of the product you purchased.

The only issue I'd like clarity on is the "active" connection issue.

Notice that the OP from the CEO said that users who do not abide by the T&C would be asked to move to another package. Seems quite a reasonable response.

In my opinion Mweb should not have started this uncapped service, face it you will never get a clear answer from them.

Hi All

Regular use of our ADSL Uncapped service in an inappropriate manner which is affecting our other customers’ internet experience is seen as unacceptable use. This includes:
• Sharing accounts: where one user shares their ADSL connection with other users
• Unattended use: where a user installs software that allows continuous downloads and uploads
• Bypassing our shaping policy: where a user intentionally hides bandwidth heavy downloading
• Using their connection for commercial gain: Connecting and charging users to access their ADSL line for commercial gain

More information on our policies on abuse can be found in our ADSL Terms & Conditions, sections 7 and 12.

MWEB Operations

Thanks. Three of these make sense and I don't think anyone could really argue against them. The only one which seems to have caused some discussion here is the second one. I'm expected to watch my downloads and click a link now and again to show that the connection is active? :)

 I dont' want to go back to the days of rationing my precious, expensive cap out over the course of the month. 30MB today, 30MB tomorrow, oops, did 60MB today so less tomorrow, oops, buy a booster to get me to the end of the month.

Three of the four points mentioned are no-brainers and are clearly in contravention of the T&C. (1) If you buy a non-commercial account, don't use it for commercial purposes. (2) Don't abuse the network by circumventing their necessary and essential shaping protocols (which you are aware of because you signed up for a shaped account anyway). (3) Don't share your account details with other people (the T&C are applicable between you as the account holder and MWeb as the ISP).

I'd like more clarity on the "active" connection issue. I suspect what they are trying to say with this is that you shouldn't leave your torrent clients running 24/7/365?

Guys this is all obvious stuff. Clearly at the price point they sell the account they just don't want you downloading 24/7. With that being said its perfectly fine to run your download manager for a few hours a day.

Exactly, I'd really be surprised if other posters demanding a "GB limit" couldn't think of this themselves. Really people are getting a bit too worried about this. No one has been disconnected by MWeb that I've heard of so far, and many people are using hundreds of GB's continuously. Id have to push myself to keep downloading over 200Gb a month for more than a few months anyway.

Would be nice if they'd clarify how they plan to use that "active use" bit of the T&C though, because you could say that anyone downloading torrents or making coffee while something downloads is in "breach".

1) Is downloading a torrent file via HTTP considered bypassing your shaping policy?
2) You basically saying that downloading while not in front of the PC aka a download manager is against the rules? So in other words if a user uses more than x amount you guys are going to warn the user?

Please clear this up

Hi All

1) Yes it is. The shaping rules are in place for a reason, which is to ensure that all of our customers get a fair experience on the network. Third party services which actively seek to bypass these rules, such as seedbox type services, or vpn tunelling with the express purpose of bulk downloading at line speed are not permitted for use on our uncapped products. Customers who wish to download constantly at line speed should consider an upgrade to one of our Internet Addict Products, which were designed for this type of usage.

2) Not at all, however queuing up multiple downloads so as to constantly keep your line running at full speed 24/7 falls into the category of not playing fair.

guys stop complaining , you want to complain check out afrihost t&c , they are basically shaped to death and their FUP changes weekly. i know have been with afrihost for a month dont get me wrong afrihost is a great isp but there uncapped offering just plainly sucks.

So would you say mr mweb that if downloaded after hours only there would be no worries? Say from 6 til 6 type effort, would this break any rules?

Thank you for responding MWEB Operations (whichever manager you are this evening?)

Hi Killadoob

It's not so much about the time of day. Remember, because our network is primarily consumer based the normal 'after hours' thinking doesn't always apply. By now we're sure everyone in this forum is aware of the challenges with regards to the availability of local IPC bandwidth. We'd really prefer a situation where customers understand this and play fairly, as Derek suggested, rather than having to annoy everyone with a set of Draconian rules with acceptable times and gigabyte limits.

Just because the sign at the restaurant door says 'all you can eat' doesn't mean you have to keep shoveling it in until the paramedics arrive :)

R1k for loads of decent bandwidth is worth it. I remember in 2004 my first adsl line 512K with 3gb was R600- R800 pm with top ups.

Service rocks, we've come along way - 380kbs average when needing to download a 4gb iso from microsoft in around 3hours is epic..

Stop crying people, be happy !!

These rules have always been in place, and of course downloading torrents via http is abuse, otherwise why would mweb bother to shape it, do remeber you are not paying bussiness or real uncapped prices, im sure in the future those will be cheaper, just have to be patient, its still much better than capped accounts imo.

+1

:D :D :D :D :D

Lotsa people gotta learn this still. "I must have more simply because I can and I've paid for it!" :)

We know that you left that download unattended for 2m43s when you needed to relieve yourself and thereby violated the agreed T&Cs. You will shortly be receiving instructions via email on migrating to MWEB's 'Internet Addict' package for only R1999/month.
