MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

I'm all for curbing the abusers that "do not play fair" but this vague statement leaves anyone open as a target. Clarify what is not considered fair by your AUP since there is nothing in writing stating this.

Does anyone know if MWEB has an 'Acceptable Payment Policy' to compensate/reimburse users for when the network is down?

define "playing fairly" in terms of gb.

Hi All

The issue is not so much around the amount of usage but rather what a customer is using their ADSL line for and how they are using the internet and if this is appropriate and in-line with our Terms & Conditions.

Are you "an abuser" if you go to an all you can eat buffet for R589 and REALLY eat ALL YOU CAN EAT? I mean, I can eat a lot, I'm a big guy with a big appetite.
or, do you go to the "All you can eat buffet" for R589 and are told you're only allowed to make two trips to the carvery and no bathroom breaks to limit beverage consumption? As part of their fair usage policy...

Then don't call it an "All you can eat buffet".
Call it, "You can eat 1.5kgs of food for R589 but we'll still charge you for drinks."

See, just what I said..
Do you people even read the posts here, or just the titles & then make your mind up and start bitching about something that doesnt even exist??

I like it!

Has anyone on MyBB ever reported M-Web complaining about their usage? I would like to hear that story...

I am doing some pretty heavy duty transfer on my 4MB uncapped, and doing some stuff that may be pushing the limit (that I don't need to discuss here).

If I ever got told to leave the service - I'd back to tell the story here.

Plus I am an adult and I really don't give a **** if they think I am a naughty boy. Too many people here worry about these silly, vague messages - they take my money without blushing (even when it goes down) - I am not going to loose any sleep if some pencil pusher gets his knickers in a twist.

Hi All

Regular use of our ADSL Uncapped service in an inappropriate manner which is affecting our other customers’ internet experience is seen as unacceptable use. This includes:
• Sharing accounts: where one user shares their ADSL connection with other users
• Unattended use: where a user installs software that allows continuous downloads and uploads
• Bypassing our shaping policy: where a user intentionally hides bandwidth heavy downloading
• Using their connection for commercial gain: Connecting and charging users to access their ADSL line for commercial gain

More information on our policies on abuse can be found in our ADSL Terms & Conditions, sections 7 and 12.

i really don't know what everyone is so angry about

You're joking, right? I use about a 1/3 of that in 3.5 months.

Different strokes. IMO someone paying R1000 a month for 30 gigs must be joking (or crazy).

Exactly - I am getting good usage out of my account - and I don't think I have heard of anyone who has been asked to leave yet. I am possibly breaking rules 2 & 3 of the AUP (as quoted 2 posts above) - but I doubt any relatively serious downloaders with a brain aren't breaking at least one of them.

1) Is downloading a torrent file via HTTP considered bypassing your shaping policy?
2) You basically saying that downloading while not in front of the PC aka a download manager is against the rules? So in other words if a user uses more than x amount you guys are going to warn the user?

Please clear this up

Its not as much the transfer numbers everyone is angry and worried about, its the inconsistancies and veiled threats, they treat their customers like children when its they that leaped before they thought. Personally I'm happy enough with what I get down per month.

Their T&C clearly states that the service is uncapped for active internet use, which excludes the above.

Jip its uncapped but...not uncapped.
Hahaha and people are not supposed to get confused about this.
They should just be honest for once, this is for uncapped browsing.

I think if you went to the buffet and took ALL of the chicken legs, scoffed them down, returned and took ALL of the fresh supply of chicken legs, etc. that would be considered "unfair". Or if you piled your plate so high that you were barely able to carry it. Or if you took SO long in the queue piling your plate up that no-one else could get to the buffet. Or if you took three plates of starters, three plates of main course and all the chocolate brownies from the dessert table in one go. Nowhere does it state that you can't do this. Or that you shouldn't do it. If you ever try any of these though, I'm sure we'd all be interested to hear about it :)

 I've wondered about this clause. So if I'm downloading a 300GB file over my 384kbps line I have to sit in front of the machine and watch it download? Or do I need to go one step further and click a link on a webpage every 30 minutes while the download is running, so that it looks like the account is "active"

We've repeatedly been told that the "best" time for downloads is what? Between 1am and 5am or something? So to actually make use of an uncapped account we need to be awake and "actively" using the line while downloading between 1am and 5am? Gonna be lotsa sleepy sleepy people at the office ... :D
