MWEB - Message from CEO - Acceptable Use Policy

I'm sorry but it is possible to DL >500GB on MWEB without 'cheating'.
It is also prudent to use proxy services for privacy protection. Privacy is fair.
Uncapped = Uncapped.

MWEB advertised the service as UNCAPPED. This is misleading advertising. I'm sorry but that's how it is. ABUSE is nonsense.

MWEB needs to change the name of their account to 100GB or something similar.

Why 100GB? You just said it is possible todownload 500GB without "cheating".

MWeb is challenging the WAY in which people use the connection, not how MUCH is downloaded.

Uncapped IS uncapped, within the limits of the T&C.

Indeed! I am not hearing any talk of capping individuals. I am, however, hearing mention being made of individual accounts being terminated if they repeatedly infringe on the T&Cs. I really cannot see the problem with this!

Why should you be expected to download 500Gb per month?!?

And what, may I ask, are you using 500Gb on every month that requires such levels of privacy? Is it data intensive business needs? Well then feel free to pay for the BUSINESS service!

What he downloads is none of your business and never will be.

The arguments of people heading towards "Oh you're downloading things you shouldn't!" or "Piracy! Piracy!" are completely unrelated to this topic.

Data is data, leave it at that.

MWeb has confirmed that using a VPN/SSH is not abuse, obviously.

However, consistent and repeated hauling of several GB of data at maximum line speed over an encrypted VPN/SSH is abuse on the Connect (home/soho), shaped package. If you don't like that, purchase the CORRECT package for your USAGE.

You seem very angry with this announcement from MWeb. I wonder why ...

If the account is uncapped any USAGE should be fine.

I'm endlessly shocked at how growing up in this capped country has warped so many of us to accept caps and restrictions on products that title themselves otherwise.

No, it's not unrelated at all. Peter raised the issue of the quantity downloaded and the privacy needed. I am downloading legally (possibly not legal content but conforming to MWebs shaping rules) on my MWeb account, and as a result am not in contravention of the T&Cs, so I'm interested in what he requires that amount of data for and the related privacy he seeks. My sneaky suspicion is that it is the tunnelling being referred to by MWEb!

It is possible to download 1TB per month on MWEB without bypassing their shaping - i.e. not cheating. All of that can be legitimate (not copyrighted stuff).

Obviously that will be 'abuse'.

100GB or maybe 50GB - who knows what MWEB considers 'fair use'?

It is a shaped uncapped account, so no, any usage is not fine. The account is supplied under the terms that shaping will take place for certain protocols. Disguising those protocols degrades the system for offering these types of accounts.

Please READ the T&C

For the millionth time, no service is provided without Terms and Conditions. Usage is usage within the Terms and Conditons. FFS!

FFS! This is not the only offering from MWEB! If you want true uncapped with no shaping and no restrictions and no fair use policies and VPN until your heart is content then get their BUSINESS service.

I'm "endlessly shocked" at the sense of entitlement most South Africans seem to feel!

Not by their current statements, it won't.

Try to understand, if you've managed to download 1TB and you have not bypassed their shaping rules, then you have actually been allowed to download that 1TB because the network usage made that bandwidth available at that time and you utilised it.

But, as said before, the T&C is identical to the capped one so why are they only applying the rule to uncapped people??

Where did you suck that from?

i blame OBE ;)

I like to think that I have been a supporter of Mweb. But the question has to be asked of how their AUP compares to what is considered a "standard" AUP internationally. My point is that i am guessing that internationally the fact you may download GBs over a secure protocol DOES NOT count as a violation of uncapped internet. I suppose, of course, that internationally there are probably no shaped uncapped accounts. Which begs the question whether a shaped account should be considered as being uncapped.

No, where did you see this?

The MWeb rep has clearly explained (in this thread or elsewhere) the four factors which constitute abuse. I suggest you (re)read them.

Without reading them myself, it seems apparent that the T&Cs are left open to interpretation depending on the account one has. The term "fair use" in itself is open to interpretation. From what I have seen most of these T&Cs have a clause that allows them to be changed at any time anyway, so the companies can alter them as required. This is fair enough as certain individuals are always looking for ways to cheat the system!

You can hide your suspicion.

If someone chooses to use a VPN for privacy reasons for all connections - and certainly uncapped VPN services are a dime a dozen, it should not be anyone's problem if they do so.
Privacy is important - it doesn't matter for what. That's not your business.

Now MWEB saying that Privacy protection is ABUSE and you may not run a VPN service 24/7 and use their network in any way you want.

Again, let me repeat.

It is possible to do as much as 1TB /mo on MWEB not cheating (not using VPN) etc.
This would be called 'abuse'.

Secondly, it is prudent for privacy reasons to use a VPN.

MWEB needs to clarify what they call abuse -
1. How much data is abusive?
2. How much data on VPN is abusive?

In effect this means one has to sacrifice privacy for the sake of MWEB if using MWEB's account.

MWEB is welcome to shape SSL/VPN/etc traffic.
