MWEB peering changes begin - fallout imminent

And back up :)

IMHO, this is going to cost MTN a small fortune.

MTN Profit = Existing Profit - MWeb peering fee - Extra international costs

I know Mweb are doing it for their own benefit and I am not a fan of theirs but I have to congratulate them. This will definitely help the local market.

I honestly couldnt care what the reason is but alot of my time was wasted today , being unable to work alot of the time, server being hosted at hetzner  i phoned to instantley cancel my account , and i couldnt , seems ill have to pay for the whole of next month ... seems there stunt was well timed

You left a term out of your equation:

MTN Profit = Existing Profit - MWeb peering fee - Extra international costs - peering costs paid to other isps

I think the most amusing part of this, is that Hetzner only has 1 bandwidth provider...

Thats enough of a reason to go find a hosting provider that understands the meaning of redundant.

It's Thursday afternoon. The sun's out and there's no wind.

Go and knock some golf balls about while the routers settle down.

Maybe that will change down the line but it won't be effected for this round although I should probably include the business that they are going to lose as in post # 64.

I guess it all depends on whether your website exists to serve your customers, or your hosting provider.

I'm having some serious trouble understanding why people are complaining about a link that's gone down for a couple of hours:

There are 525600 minutes in a year

If your SLA guarantees 99% uptime - 520344 minutes are guaranteed.
That leaves 5256 minutes for downtime
That's +/- 87 hours in a year.

99.9% upstime - 525074 guaranteed minutes
Leaving 526 minutes for downtime
+/- 8 hours

99.99% upstime - 525547 guaranteed minutes
- 53 minutes minutes for downtime

Is anyone in SA offering four nines? Most people I've spoken to are lucky to get 99% guaranteed.

If you can't get to your servers right now. Go do something else. There's a big world away from the keyboard. Nothing is so important that it can't wait a couple of hours.

To the best of my knowledge, MTN's servers are in Great Westerford, Newlands.

Teraco is situated in Great Westerford, Newlands.

As far as I can gather, CINX appears to have been extended from the IS offices to Great Westerford, Newlands.

MWEB is connected to CINX.

Please tell me there's more to the physical side of peering than running a length of UTP from one rack to another in Teraco's Meet Me Room.

Would the term whiny drama queen help?

Of course there are times when watching a porn video where loss of picture could induce a serious loss of performance.

PMSL.

I'm off to the beach to watch the sunset.

Yep, Layers 8, 9 and 10 of the ISO network stack.
