MWEB refuses to pay for IP transit anymore

Now just go get a list of the top 100 local sites sites, offer them massively discounted rates to host on MWEB network, and telkom will be paying you to keep the connection up :D

If content is the deciding factor in this game of poker then I think MWeb/Naspers is holding a very strong hand.

Why don't I see any Myadsl branded popcorn stands in here already? This is going to be something I want to watch and I'm gonna need my popcorn, sherbit

Thanks Rudi and Mweb now I can finally forgive you for attempting to hard code the BIG BLACK BOX modem to only work on Mweb back in the day.

Awesome going its about time that something get done.
:D

Oh, that little thing made me some money in unlocking services - I have to thank them for it. :)

So now... @ the other ISP's represented in here - who else is just waiting to follow suit, and who is going to dig their heels in?

Well -- looking at the top 10 South African websites (from http://mybroadband.co.za/news/internet/15734-Top-websites.html).

News24.com (MWEB/Naspers)
SuperSport.com (MWEB/Naspers)
IOL (Internet Solutions)
Football365 (International/UK)
MSN ZA (International/Ireland)
Times LIVE (MTN Network Solutions)
Hotmail SA (International/US)
Mweb.co.za (MWEB/Naspers)
DStv.com (MWEB/Naspers)
Junkmail (Internet Solutions)

If SEACOM doesn't give any problems I think MWeb might be able to squeeze a victory here. If SEACOM does go down in the next month, we will be in for some big trouble.

Internet Solutions does have some leverage, so they might be able to get a sweet deal. Telkom I suspect will just be hard-ass and not deal with anybody - but don't worry, it won't be out of spite, it will be out of incompetence.

Firstly, I commend MWEB for having the guts to take this stance, its a very tough stance to take and the effects of it will be rather interesting.

There are a few possibilities as to what could happen here.

Thanks Andrew for your comments. It's always refreshing to get your informed opinion and viewpoints.

@Mods: can we have a poll on Andrew's 3 options on what the outcome could be?

+ 1. Could we please have a poll for this. Would be very interesting to see what all the MyBB'ers think.

Times LIVE (MTN Network Solutions)
This illustrates how fragment MTN's Internet divisions are. Times LIVE resides on the MTN NS (ex CITEC) part of their network who seem to peer freely, while the MTN Bus (ex Verizon) part refuse to peer. Talk about the one hand not knowning what the other is doing.

MTN SA really need to get their house in order.

Andrew explained it pretty well. Well done that man!

I applaud MWEB for once again kicking off something that will benefit everyone in the long run. Fortunately they are large enough to start something like this, lets hope they can finish it!

As I always mention, if you had asked me (before the uncapped revolution) if I would ever sign up with MWEB, you would get a resounding NO along with very negative perceptions of how they used to operate. I am now an extremely happy customer who recommends them to anyone looking for an ISP (I work retail at a PC store). This chalks up one more for their score.

Wow, there's a lot happening in the broadband world lately:

Telkom's 10Mbps Upgrades
Fight for LLU
SEACOM - And Mweb making the first move
Open Peering - And Mweb's admirable attempt to reduce local bandwidth costs

YOU GO MWEB! Even though I'm a Cybersmart customer, I'm willing to support you all the way.

If the outcome depends on who complains the loudest, then I bet all of those on MyBB would flood their stubborn ISP's with complaints about low speeds and latency, all in support of Mweb.

Talk about content being king, wait till they (MWeb) start streaming DSTV and you can only get a decent connection if you use them as your ISP. This is much more of a content war than a capacity war.

I believe some peering is already in place.
