It's not just MWEB. Our mail relay server sits in Teraco with very decent IP connectivity. This afternoon it was delivering messages to the gmail mail firewalls immediately, but the messages then took hours to wind their way from there to the gmail inboxes.
We also noticed that there was around 4% packet loss on messages being sent to smtp.gmail.com around lunch time today.
Not much we can do about problems like this that are three or four networks upstream from us.

It seemed there was a upstream problem with Google peering today. Most people with gmail accounts setup through email clients like Outlook or thunderbird had issues with either sending or receiving mail today, even though the http gmail (accessed via browser) worked fine.
It has since been sorted out though. Like portcullis said, there is not much we can do in a situation like that as it is a free service, unless you have the business Google Apps, then i suppose you could whine a bit
