MWEB Throttled uncapped ADSL feedback

Was this in the new, cheaper accounts or standard account?
Thread heading says "Throttled uncapped account" so I think it will be all the uncapped accounts that are not deemed "Premium" accounts, but I might be wrong. Not a MWEB member, so I might be wrong, but that is what a MWEB sales consultant tried to tell me on the phone sometime last week.

If you want to download a lot then don't get these accounts simple as that

30gig is not a lot....

And had mweb advertized the product truthfully (30gig capped internet with 90% speed reduction once you reach your cap for R449 per month) instead of lying that its uncapped then no one would be complaining, because no one would have subscribed.

urm.... so i was thinking of getting the 1meg line from mweb. will that be throttled too? and if so which other isp should i go for?

and if i want to order telkom uncapped.... why does this page not work http://residential.telkom.co.za/broadband-internet/access-plans/uncapped/
clicking on "do Uncapped up to 1 Mbps" takes me to a blank page.

Mweb 1 meg is unthrottled so you don't have to worry I'm on there 1 meg an never been throttled going to be upgrading to 4 meg Premuim uncapped just have wait 10 working days can't wait

They say in the product description that its no for heavy downloading but more for fast browsing etc.
Check this out you won't have to worry how much you downloading and speed been throttled and it works out about the same as mweb

hi guys, so Monday i ordered x2 adsl lines from telkom (having not telephone line at home) as i stay in to different places. the service was amazing. phones got answered in under 1min and first line is getting installed today, second line on Friday. i decided to go with their 1meg connection as mweb seems to dodgy atm.

please can someone tell me if this adsl router is worth buying.

Personally I would suggest you look at an N300 router, and my personal choice is Netgear.

Meanwhile .... 6 months later :-)
I know we all r looking for threads on mw issues but OP is old (on another tangent ... I miss Opie, sigh)

I'd be interested if rpm would share connection details on who is connecting from what ISPs? Month by month. See if those who have left have made any dent.

UPDATE: Throttled again as soon as i hit 30gig. I have downloaded about 25 of these gigs out of peek time (on weekend and after about 6 in the evening) so theres no way i could have put strain on the network. mweb seriously need to change their advertising of this product from uncapped to 30gig capped because at the moment they are guilty of false advertizing. Only 2 weeks left until this crap is canceled and i can join an isp that actually offers uncapped internet.

Hershaw said that the customers who MWEB contacted for excessive usage patterns are “way, way over the top compared to the rest of our base”.

It seems that 30gigs is way, way too much.

And remember, this amount wasn't a problem before, only way it can be a problem for the network now? They cut capacity costs behind the scenes. Scumbaggery at its best.

Im really curious as to what their throttling policy is exactly. MWEB guy says its based on average over the past 30 days. Id luuurve to know what exactly that average is?

If people could post what their 30 day average was when they got throttled, we should be able to figure out the trend pretty quickly?

Also, what are other ISPs throttling policies like? I would imagine theyre very similiar.

As far as I know no other ISP throttles, just actively/passively shape, which is what Mweb USED to do.

Shaping itself is pretty illegal in more developed countries (in the US it is practically scandalous to catch an ISP using a shaper for example) but here it's an evil we've learned to accept, and still a hell of a lot better than throttling.

Shaping is like your car slowing down on certain lanes at certain times based on how many people are in the same lane, throttling is like your car not going passed 40k on all roads, because you exceeded some magical imaginary number - that no one can give - in the past.

Ti throttles too, but you have to pull a lot to get throtted.

I been with them a while now and haven't throttled yet.
But then again I'm not a heavy downloader, at worst I use around 200gb

shaping<>throttling

I like your analogy. Here's a cookie :D
