Saw a tweet this morning that Seacom's services have been restored close to capacity, the tweet here and the report here.

Running a 4Mbps uncapped premium account, download speeds seem decent. HTTP downloads running at 420kbps and international torrents running at 390-410kbps atm. Haven't yet tested Youtube or Netflix.

27 MARCH 2013

SEACOM can confirm that at 06:20 GMT 27 March, the SMW4 cable system suffered a cable cut off the coast of Egypt. Earlier this morning, SEACOM had restored all services on both SMW4 and IMEWE cable systems.

SEACOM is currently in the process of prioritizing and reallocating already available capacity for customers and sourcing further capacity to re-establish full restoration.

We will update further as information becomes available.

I'm on the 4meg uncapped package and I'm currently downloading VLC media player at LESS than 10 KB/sec. If this is 90% of speeds, then I think some people failed math at school.

Yeah, I'm this ---->.<---- close to ditching Mwedge.

and now the CEO blames Telkom congestion, one thing I do not understand though, if I use a Afrihost account or any other service provider that does not use Seacom, the speed is fantastic. Surely I am connecting through the same Telkom exchange until it goes to the international cables?

What he is saying is true and Telkom denies it until someone that works there finally admits it's the exchange.

I've been fighting with them for 6 months and I've had 8 technicians here.

Have a 2 meg line because of distance from the exchange and of course they haven't installed a mini dslam in Sunningdale Cape town in 10 years.

I'm lucky if I get 1 meg often I max out at 70k/s while paying for a 2 meg uncapped line.

I speed tested and use Afrihost and also telkom guest account, so it is the line/exchange.

They make every lame excuse till some of the techs admit it's the exchange that is congested.

Finally they moved me to a new exchange and everything was fine, the next day they moved me back to the old one and can't tell me why.

I'm switching to wireless, so over Telkom.

Before this issue I had almost 0 issues on Mweb.

I still don't see this on my line, MWeb, speed fluctuates all the time, downloading the latest Nvidia drivers downloads at 25Kb/s on Mweb, at 380KB/s on Imaginet. Same router, same exchange. Tried the same test with Axxess, Afrihost and Webafrica, all far faster than Mweb.

Steam downloads are also not consistent, download speeds go from zero to 480, like a heart beat, with the other ISP accounts, steady speed.

Being a Forex trader, I can safely state, it always boils down to this: You need to make an INFORMED decision here. The signals are there to be read. The "opinion leaders" would have you think this and that, in the end your own observation and action is the only one that counts.

WE as retail clients are way too fragmented in personal experience of service provided at a given moment, let alone to see an obvious progression of such. No cumulative conclusion. I have seen the Telkom congestion being speculated upon, where it actually did occur and it's passing. over this period the "argument" was going here an there, all over the show, while the provider shield himself in the confusion.

Coming from an industrial environment, recurring probs are identified and the real why obtained and the problem closed!!!!!! I have had it with the "switch your router off for x time" If that is the most visited "quick fix", where is the loop closure????? Keep the masses busy with this and that while policies and system utilization and budgets are flexed behind the scenes ad nauseum.

Therefore you have to be systematic in your findings. make your own findings and move on, make a decision.
I have seen about all isp providers in SA having a cock-up some time, that is fine, that is "normal".
But please, don't get yourself herded. THIS cock-up started WAY before SEACOM.
SEACOM is actually the diversion...

In times of upheaval or extreme conditions, the real issues gets revealed. Like now. Take note.

(i conclude, 3rd whisky in the rounds....... so for safety reasons, yourself and mine, i have to stall here..............but above is true in my obscure way :p... hehehehe)
