MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Hoax or Real ?

I got an email last week claiming to be from MWeb and saying that I am abusing their network and if I do not stop they will terminate my account.

There are a few things that make be think this is a scam :
1) I am on uncapped so there is no abuse in terms of volume.
2) I am on a shaped account so Mweb controls my traffic.
3) A year ago I did 500GB+ a month and never got such emails, now I get this and I am not even on 250GB yet.
4) I have to indicate that I got the message in order to avoid termination.

Anyone else got such emails? Are they scams or are they real?
I doubt whether they are real but if they are real then I'm gonna start bashing MWeb like you have never seen before.

Morning Rouxenator

When did you get the mail? I suggest sending our abuse team a mail to confirm if it is real, [email protected]. They will also let you know what it is they picked up that constitutes abuse.

Got it sometime last week, only saw it on the weekend. Do you think it can be for real? I don't use any thing that by passes shaping mechanism but I do leave my torrents on 24/7. Never had issues with it before.

The email does claim that according to them abuse is continually streaming large amounts of audio or video and downloading large volumes of files. Obviously I do that, hence the fact that I have uncapped, but those do not sound like valid reasons for abuse on a shaped product.

The best thing to do is send the abuse team an email. They are the best people to answer you with any of your questions or concerns.

Thanks, will do that, appreciate the feedback.

However I should warn you, if it is legit then we are going to have one epic battle :)

I also got a mail like that last month. Same type of account. Your technical people at the help-desk is completely useless. They could not even tell me how much data I have used or what constitutes abuse. The guy at the Cresta shop told me anything over 60Gb a month is considered abuse.

I ended up canceling my Mweb account and going with another provider.

If I wanted a 60Gb account I would have gotten one. Shape the account if you need to, but don't sell it as uncapped if you can only do 60gb on it.
/end rant ... :p

Fo shizzle ?! :wtf:

Nah in that case I'm just going to ignore the email then. I have done 500+ GB before without issues, they can go ahead and suck my hat. I'll download as much as I want and if they want to cut me off I'll get Afrihost.

Mweb Guy, can you confirm where this new MO comes from? What is the rationale behind it?

I also got one recently, my patterns haven't really changed in my 4 years with mweb.
Find it bs that i only get told i'm abusing when nothing has changed.

Mwebs reasoning was due to them upgrading their monitoring software or something like that.

Getting Afrihost next month, already given my notice.

Thanks, now I know it is not a scam just Mweb not checking their automated alert systems.

I'll ignore it for now and stick with Mweb, but I hope for their sake they fix this glitch.
Else I'll be switching too, and not just switching, I'll troll them like only I can troll.

News server is fine for me atm, getting the usual half line speed for daytime

Ok so day off again for me. Spent 45 minutes on the phone with Telskum this morning and their circular logic of phoning other departments.

Results: Got them to report a fault on the line and the exchange which is by definition part of the line. Told them not to call out a technician as I pay them enough already and the problem points to the exchange. I was told that requesting an exchange move is impossible without changing physical address. What a bunch of poephols. I basically ended up telling them that if they have an overcongested exchange and a less congested, physically closer exchange is available to a client, why not allow them to move to alleviate pressure on the overcongested one and also satisfying the client at the same time? Anyways, got a call back from a customer quality of service agent, and I made the suggestions of 1: Being able to report overcongested exchanges (of which the denizens of Telskum say is not possible) and 2: Being able to request an exchange move without having to change house. Hopefully a +1 for the people there :)

Been running traceroutes to Mweb address all day with 11ms on the first hop and now at 4PM still the same. Will check at 5PM to watch the disappointment set in again =(

Down, down down, damn this is irritating, cannot even log onto ABSA to do online banking. Speedtest is fone though, probably cached somewhere to give false results.

and as I post I can now log on, still not good enough.

No idea really, get calls from Telkom and Mweb and both say its fine, Telkom did say there were moving me to a different dslam or circuit at the exchange. I havent noticed any improvment.
