Message from CEO – 23 March

As SEACOM has indicated in previous communications, multiple cable systems continue to be affected across Africa, the Middle East and Asia. I know that many of you are keen to know the cause of the outage is a physical cable cut some kilometres north of the coast of Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea. This is not likely to be known until the cable is repaired in the coming week or two and the damaged section is recovered from the seabed and inspected. However we suspect, based on our experience with sub-sea systems and the nature of the sea area where the cut has occurred, that the most likely cause is external aggression to the cable most probably caused by a larger vessel dragging its anchor across the sea bed. Unfortunately this remains a common cause of damage to cable systems globally, despite our continued efforts to protect the cable with armour, burying, notifications to ships of cable location and exclusion zones.

The SEACOM team’s first focus at this time remains getting restoration services turned up and our resources are committed to that work. However, this process is proving much more complex and taking longer than we were initially told by our suppliers and would have expected. Whilst we believed we had secured adequate restoration capacity between Egypt and Europe yesterday (Friday), it has since eventuated during today that the physical capability to connect this capacity to our services in Europe is neither adequate nor stable enough. In addition the capacity that may be available is in a long line of activations requested by many carriers (and requiring many hundreds of Gb’s) and is not progressing at the rate we, or our customers, need.

SEACOM continues to push for activation as a priority, co-ordinating across a number of carriers internationally. However, as this is not providing solutions in the time frame we require, we are also actively seeking new restoration solutions. This will continue to take some time and we are not able to provide timeframes as yet on when services will be restored.

Please be assured that the SEACOM team is working hard to get our services back up as quickly as we can. We will continue to communicate directly to customers and post here as we have information for you.

With our sincerest apologies,

Mark Simpson

CEO, SEACOM

OMG, we will be at 56k dialup speeds for a whole ****ing month... Like the last time, who here remembers the last time seacom had a serious cable break that took 3 weeks to repair? Openweb here I come, because bioshock infinite should be preloading right now. Mweb has really let us down, I hope there is some sort of compensation.

WTF its still offline?!?!?!? Looks like the Seacom dude lied by saying they are putting service on little by little!! What is mweb last on the list by the looks of it?!?!?!

WHAT A DOUCHE BAG!! Ergo MWEB im paying a R1000 a month just to use your 10mb services.. if you cant accommidate me, im sure openweb or who ever would be more than happy to receive my money!! Make a freaking plan!!!

Actually it was mweb who promised within 24hr restoration
Good Afternoon Everyone,

Please note that SEACOM have confirmed cable breaks, This could take some time to fix.

SEACOM are obtaining capacity on an alternate cable, that should restore our network to full capacity within the next 24hrs.

Please bear with us during this time.

Ye, being at the bottom of Africa literally makes us last on the list. Ie. If there is any capacity left after the rest of Africa get their fix.

Please...there must be an alternative to somehow get Skype working...

I can't go this weekend without Skype up.

Have you tried the Axxess 3 Gig trial? Took all of 5 minutes, input credentials, reboot router - and working internet again.

If MWeb is going to be broken for the next month I'll be asking them to suspend the ADSL portion of my account for the next month and use that money to pay for an Axxess month - after that, who knows

Allow me to post this :

Thank you for correcting me bro, I was never a guy who ever went off on Mweb for giving us crappy service.. EVER!! But this is getting insulting!!! WTF man I cant work, cant surf and can barey download!!!

WTF! WTF!!!! What the fudge am I paying for!!! Its like they just dont care and decided that if it gets repaired, it repaired!!!! (on their own steam of course) Consider this Mweb by the end of this month im moving to Openweb! Sure they might be more expensive, but at least they have more than one backbone to be dependent on, so why do we USERS who actually pay break neck prices get the CRAPPIEST service when your main backbone dies and gives us less than stellar speeds for the lulz?!!?!?!

Hi All

Seacom are working tirelessly to implement alternate routing for us and I'm sure they'll get this up and running.

Your after the effect excuses are tiring. Smaller ISP's than the Mweb giant are not so seriously affected. WHY? Your CEO must sell his merc as he deserves a old VW (a pink one) with painted flowers as decals.

It's a bloody shame that you depend on Seacom to accommodate you a backup solution.

Tried the 3gig thing with axxess?

Same here. My 1Gb afrihost account is 100%, but mweb (international) is FUBAR.

I am not impressed. If Afrihost is able to reroute traffic so as to minimize downtime impact, then surely mweb can do the same....

Or am I missing something here?

Hi everyone

We've just received an update from Seacom: Due to the number of affected cables the restoration work is taking longer than expected and is unlikely to be completed today.

Seacom are doing everything possible to restore services as soon as they can. We will update you again once we have further news.

This:

Evening, you can't compare us to another provider during an outage.

We certainly have allot going for us, e.g. DOTA 2 servers :p

Guys I understand that we are being affected by the outage more than some of the other providers at the moment.

There has been occasion's during this year and last year when we were not affected by outages and they were.

This is not something we like either and we will do all we can to get the network running as per normal as soon as we can.

Shame man, that will NOT go down well with your users :)

Does anyone perhaps know why during this time of outage, a download of BF3 from Origin is running at full speed and YouTube also works okay but basic internet browsing of international sites is really bad?
