MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

No. I'm downloading a copy of Microsoft Office 2010 Standard Edition from this address (at around 70kB/s): http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/01/(removed)//office2010/X17-75575.exe.

Hi DarkSpectre

Just completed the test which was done a up to 1MB account and same setup as a customer.

DL speed was between 90kb/s & 105kb/s.

I then fired up another DL while that one was running and it took a dip, between 54kb/s & 68kb/s and the 2nd DL was running at about 57kb/s

Ok, thanks for the feedback :) It's definitely not being shaped since I'm downloading it at around 100kB/s now :)

I can confirm similar issues on my side. Worse still, this happens in 5 man dungeons. Yesterday it was so bad that for a whole minute my game froze up due to a lag spike before fast forwarding to the current point of the fight.

When I switch to an Afrihost capped account all is well again. I did post a traceroute earlier in the thread and there seems to be something funny going on with the fifth hop to a cpt server.

Please sort this out asap because I'm at my wits end and ready to move to Afrihost uncapped who is not having this issue.

Hi Gents

Those tracert results are actually just about perfect, just slightly confusing and this is something I have clarified with our engineers before. Because our international circuits are tunneled to the London POP you don't see the WACS routing on the trace. So when the latency jumps on hop 5 this is when you are actually hitting the London side of the link, which in fact makes that ping pleasantly low :)

You will also note that between that hop and your international destination the latency only increases by around 10 - 20ms - if that was local latency that would be, well just impossible :D

You can verify this very easily by running a continuous ping test to both an international and a local address. If that latency was on a local hop then you would see it locally as well.

I just ran these two tests quickly from my desktop, which are valid as our office LAN traffic in CPT follows the exact same routing as the ADSL network. The first is to Mybroadband, the second to the BBC.

Ping statistics for 41.203.21.137:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 53ms, Average = 33ms

Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 145ms, Maximum = 146ms, Average = 145ms

Which is not to say that I'm disputing the fact that you're experiencing a problem, we're just going to have to dig a little further to establish the actual cause.

I will run some tests myself on my own GW2 experience to see how it compares and ask the Gamezone team to double check with the engineers on GW2 traffic signatures for starters, maybe there is a simple explanation for this.

Thanks for the feedback, I figured it was probably something to do with your nodes in London, but wasn't sure. The pings are then actually quite normal, hopefully your guys can pin point the cause of those annoying lag spikes.

We'll definitely do our best. I have only been playing the game intermittently myself and haven't really spent much time on WvW stuff so I'll put more of my attention on that with testing as this seems to be the focal point for your issues.

Which World are you guys playing on? Most of the ZAers I know have gravitated towards Aurora Glade.

TBH I still can't decide if I like the game myself. It's visually breathtaking, but coming from an older school of MMO's I can't quite shake my disappointment with the lack of any real risk/reward in the environment - it feels like you're playing in bubble wrap.

My issues are not so much in WvW, but more in high level zones and specifically dungeons and I'm on Aurora Glade yes.

I'm loving the game to death, already have two level 80 toons. I've grown tired of the typical MMO flavor, especially the combat and GW2 makes it nice and active which makes it very satisfying, especially hard dungeon content. I don't see myself getting bored of this game any time soon. :)

I was wondering when/how do I have to do to get my line upgraded/kept at the same speed? because I am paying R488 per month for a 1Mb line and uncapped adsl account? However your site does not give this option anymore. If I do my own calculations

R199 : uncapped 1Mb account MWEB
R165.00 1MB line directly from telkom

R364 != R488.

Actually telkom's DO 1MB UNCAPPED is R9 more expensive and includes line rental????

R497.37 vs R488+R148

So would it be in my own best interest to cancel my Mweb account and go back to "Telkom"? :mad:

Hello,

Currently my downloads speeds between 9am - 11pm are terrible. i struggle to break 90 kb/s on a 4mb, this has only been happening recently, last 2 weeks give or take. is there any reason for this ? as its abit crazy to say the least.

a response would be amazing, after being on the phone holding for 15 minutes i hung up as i cant be wasting all my airtime on that.

thanks.

Hey guys

Thanks for the feedback, I will check this out from my side.
I have both your account info and nakedhousee's.

Dealt with MWEB this afternoon regarding an upgrade and some other issues, and as always, everything was fast, efficient and done precisely as promised.

Impressed, thanks.

Thanks for the awesome feedback.

Anyone else having issues with dropped connections. Went down at 19:57 for 5 minutes and then again at 20:18, back at 20:21, down at 20:22 for a few seconds and back up again.

20:24, and dropped again. Switched over to WA - let's hope all good with them

Hey!

There's something wrong with my line.

I'm getting bad http download speeds (around 40kB/s). I have tried rebooting my router. It didn't help at all.

NZB downloads at 17KB/s on a 1 meg line. :mad:
Telkom was never this bad. Well, its month end so guess its time for a change.

Whatever was done to improve things... Please leave it this way! Don't touch a thing! My NNTP is back to normal again this weekend. 180-215kbps is what I'm talking about. Very pleased.

Spoke too soon. NNTP back to 25-30kbps tonight. General web browsing on stock image sites = 40-80kbps max. Poor, very poor! Not into this anymore. It is pointless paying Telkom for the 2mb line rental and Mweb for a 2mb account which runs @ under 1mb speeds.

Your technical guy calls me on Saturday and guess what? Speeds were up to 200kbps all of the sudden. I explained the issue to him with regards to NNTP and the heavy shaping over the past month and he agreed that this is not the experience I should be having. He especially pointed out that I am in no way a heavy downloader so 'should not be shaped so heavily' - his words.

Edit: I may as well move to Telkom uncapped and make everything their fault! But I am not a sucker for that kind of punishment and will have to find another solution.

It seems that the speed issue has been resolved itself. Man :( My line has not been 100% stable for the past 3 weeks now. I wouldn't be surprised if MWEB has been shaping our lines very aggressively because the 1mb is the new minimum SA ADSL line speed now.
