MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 2

Status
Not open for further replies.
Update: After installing Leatrix and doing 2 dragon events, it has noticeably improved. Whether its due to less players or it actually doing something (it did help my latency by about 40-50ms in non populated areas) it is nonetheless a step in the right direction.

Once again, will keep you posted if the situation continues to be bad.

Whatever was done to improve things... Please leave it this way! Don't touch a thing! My NNTP is back to normal again this weekend. 180-215kbps is what I'm talking about. Very pleased.

Could you please have a look into why Guild Wars 2 is performing so badly? Really bad lag spikes and this happens to all the people I know on MWEB uncapped. The people I play with that are on Afrihost and WA uncapped have no such issues.

Here's a traceroute I performed to the connected IP.

Good Afternoon Isengard, please provide me your MWEB account details via direct message.

Are you only having lag playing Guild Wars?

Edit: I have also escalated this to our network team for a further investigation.

Speeds are crawling tonight. Less than 10kb on torrents, http downloads or newshost.

Evening Wikk3d88,

Torrent speeds are not guaranteed.

Are you running these downloads concurrently? Are you connecting via LAN cable or wirelessly? How many active devices do you have on your network at the moment?

Last night was just my PC. I tried all 3 at different times, not concurrently.
Weirdly enough, this morning i started a torrent and it was running at full line speed.
Browsing last night was also quite slow.

FYI, these issues have cropped up over the past month. Have had NO speed issues prior to this, and nothing in terms of my hardware or software has changed.
Ive asked before, and Im asking again : Am i being shaped?

Hi wikk3d88

Yes, you are shaped. You have a shaped account.

If you are looking not to be shaped at all, please have a look into our unshaped packages via the following link: http://ow.ly/eQ0ML

There is one thing you guys must remember the moment you open a torrent prog it shapes you... How i know this is that when utorrent is open and you try playing a game the pings are extremely high...

I need to ask this: Is microsoft.com being shaped? Why am I downloading something from it at around 70kB/s? :(

I need a list of all the sites that are being shaped :(

Hi DarkSpectre

microsoft.com is not shaped and speed will depend on the traffic at the time. Was it a latest update?

Aaaaaand back to cr@p again lol.

This time, I had my Windows 8 Resource Monitor open to find out wtf is going on. Throughput on Tequatl (same dragon from my earlier post) was running at 40KB/s with 220ms latency (2 connections, 1 for chat and 1 for game traffic). After fight I noticed a lot of connections running connecting to the same 2 IPs but with 370ms. At the moment it's back to 220ms.

All of that seems fine. Only thing that concerns me is that with all of the activity going on (lots of players) I would expect my traffic throughput to be higher. I know that with WoW at least, when I had a 384k line, when that maxed out at 40KB/s on my bandwidth meter I would experience similar lag (several seconds delay in action casting). The very fact that this is maxing out at 40KB/s now on my 1MB line indicates to me a shaping of some sort. A few guildmates on MWEB as well seem to be complaining of similar issues.

I am going to try the Leatrix Latency fix in the hopes that increasing the TCPack will alleviate some of the latency while waiting for this shaping mess to be sorted out (even though its being denied ^.^)

Hi Steven

I've been playing a bit of GW2 myself and I'm not noticing any of the symptoms you're describing. I will do some latency checks over the next few days and see what sort of numbers it's reporting (I know from our previous congestion battles that we are practically neighbours :D).

In Dota2 when I do ping checks I get around 160 - 190ms and in game experience is very smooth.

That shouldn't actually be the case skoenman, but I'll see if we can replicate this and ask the engineers to investigate. The way our traffic prioritization works it should basically provide QoS on an individual level, in other words lower priority protocols will back off for the higher priority ones.

I have tested this recently by leaving NNTP running at full speed in the background while gaming and did not notice any slowdowns - the same should be true for torrents.

I would however, as a general rule, still recommend that you do stop any download activity while gaming to ensure an optimal experience.

*EDIT*: Just thinking about this a bit more, what you may find is that depending on how your torrent client has been configured what's actually happening is that your router is being flooded with TCP connections and this is what's degrading the overall performance.

I can confirm similar issues on my side. Worse still, this happens in 5 man dungeons. Yesterday it was so bad that for a whole minute my game froze up due to a lag spike before fast forwarding to the current point of the fight.

When I switch to an Afrihost capped account all is well again. I did post a traceroute earlier in the thread and there seems to be something funny going on with the fifth hop to a cpt server.

Please sort this out asap because I'm at my wits end and ready to move to Afrihost uncapped who is not having this issue.
