MWEB Uncapped ADSL Feedback - Part 3

Well, as long as you think of a month as "from the 10th till the 10th" instead of "from the 1st till the 31st". Bit of mind-admin.

So if you're currently throttled, you need to keep below the following daily amounts to get unthrottled:

1mbps = 3.3GB/day
2mbps = 6.6GB/day
4mbps = 13.3GB/day
10mbps = 33.3GB/day

This is based on the stats so far that have shown that throttle amount is 100GB x your line speed over 30 days.

Yes, this makes sense. I'm on 1mbps, so I figured I must ensure that I am, on average, downloading no more than 3GB per day. Suits me :) There are only so many Humble Indie Bundle games and Linux ISOs out there :)

All this is making me wonder: what is the difference between uncapped and premium uncapped now? (the difference used to be that normal uncapped got throttled, while premium didn't). So what's the difference now? Lower throttling thresholds on normal vs those on premium?

[-]There was something about this a few pages back I think. Something about gaming or contention ratios?[/-]

Edit:

It's all on their pages:

Get Uncapped ADSL: Enjoy Uncapped ADSL on a 1st tier network. Uncapped ADSL subscribers get automatic virus and spam filtering, a free 5 GB Store-It account and free fax to email. View more MWEB subscriber benefits here.

Get Premium Uncapped ADSL: Enjoy Uncapped ADSL on a 1st tier network. Premium Uncapped ADSL subscribers get 300 MB free WiFi pm, free Uncapped Website Hosting Lite for the first year and a free 5 GB Store-It account. View more MWEB subscriber benefits here.

The 1mbps is always Premium.

I saw that on their page, but surely the extra amount isn't just for a few WiFi mb's and website hosting. I specifically remember something about throttling on the normal uncapped accounts way back (think it was 20GB threshold or something?)

Hi TwilightWalker

Standard products are more affordable and aimed at the casual uncapped user, with a lower throttled rate.

Our premium products have more relaxed speed limits and these will only be applied when usage reaches levels which we deem to be abusive. The parameters for bandwidth management are more lenient on our Premium Products and will only affect a very small percentage of our customers.

I see, thanks. So it is mainly throttling. MWeb Guy - that "safe" 800GB per 30-day rolling window on the 10mbps line - I assume that's for PREMIUM Uncapped, right?

That is correct yes.

Ooooh, did we just get an actual confirmation on the (already solid) 100*mbps threshold theory?
Nice :P

Nope it is not confirmation of the amount, it is confirmation that these are for the premium and not the trottled packages.

Wow. So when you get throttled on 2mb account, your speed gets thrown to less than a 384kb account...
I had better speeds on a 384kbs account 3 years ago than I do with this throttled account.

Been told throttle is 256, maybe explains the difference, also pages are heavier now, I suspect at that speed the no longer shape so doing 2 things at once could be bumpy

You have collected alot of data by now. Any chance you have cracked the Mweb code yet and can shed light on when they throttle the various accounts?

What I could find out, albeit throwing my toys out the cot, they shape exactly the same, the difference is easier, its purely the thresholds

What percentage of the MWEB userbase is subjected to throttling at any given time? Previously, MWEB was at pains to point out that only a tiny fraction of users got the banhammer email. I wonder if the same is true now.

I believe its only the percentage that exceeded, they estimated 3% would be affected, I presume more where, knowing how one would try and really damage them, guilty myself. My mailer said I need to just keep an eye on my paterns and I went fullout, well wad throttled.

If no-one exceeds I doubt they would throttle anyone, I suspect they will increase the threshold at that point
