Hi there

For the last few days have been getting really crap speeds on my 4mb Account.
I've never had this problem before, always got full speeds.
Browsing seems okay , youtube unwatchable.

Can anyone help please.

Hi Voyager73

Please provide me with your MWEB account details and I'll look into it.

On my issue with being throttled - I have tested an Afrihost account and it downloads a 50Mb file uninterrupted from the FTP site I sent you earlier. On the MWEB account, it starts at full speed then drops to 8kbps after less than a minute and stays at 8. Definitely throttling on the part of MWEB. I'll post vids if it helps.

I can guarantee you that we do not throttle any adsl accounts, we make use of shaping.

Is it only on FTP that you notice the slowing down of speed ?

No, but perhaps you can explain why on Mweb, my downloads start off at normal (200KBps) for less than one minute, then drop to a consistent 7KBps for the remaining 75% of the file, while on Afrihost, the entire download goes at full speed (200-300kbps) for the entire file? That makes no sense to me if it's not Mweb throttling it. Is FTP included in shaped traffic?

I pm'd you details and your response was that speeds to my server were poor. I'm not sure what poor is in KBps, but 200KB suits me fine (it's in the US). 2Mbps effectively. I get that from Mweb for 30 seconds or so. I get that from Afrihost consistently. I'm not arguing that my download should be faster than 200MBps, I'm arguing that Afrihost is giving me 200MBps consistently, but Mweb gives me 7-8KBps after less than a minute (consistently).

To answer your question, it seems everything is slow. We use RDP and http as well.

Are there any other Mweb users willing to test for me? All I need is confirmation of speed of download - I'll pm you ftp details.
Thanks!

I'm willing to test for you... my line's idling.

Details pm'd, ta!
*EDIT* updated details PM'd :)

I'm having issues getting consistent speeds on that ftp server. It went from 105KBps down to 7KBps.

Tested on my dedi (at Mweb) and getting 105KBps through.
Tested on ftp.ubuntu.com and getting 105KBps through.

For how long do you get 105KBps? As in the vid above, I get 200ish but it drops to 7KBps at 30 seconds. Note the Afrihost vid - more consistent to the end.
*edit videos removed*

I've decided it's not worth my while to troubleshoot this. I've cancelled Mweb and moving to Afrihost at month end regardless. MWebguy, PM me if you want to troubleshoot further, I'm happy to help.

Time will tell if the Afrihost uncapped trumps Mweb. I'm under no illusions about it being a magic bullet and I'm sure Mweb will be stronger in some departments, but for this issue, it seems to be our best option.

ftp and http performance has been like that for me for a long time now. It's gotten to the point where i prefer to use torrents for everything because even if it's a bit slower there is a far less chance of file curruption. Allso has anyone else's line gotten rather skitso this morning, for a few hours mine was "almost dead"-"dead"-"almost dead"-etc and now its running again with a chance of dead.

EDIT: now takes turns being dead and having speed curves (slowly getting fast then after a while slowly dying)

Hi

What sort of traffic are you currently running?
I have checked my side and everything on your account seems in order.
You line readings also look good from what I can see.

You mean how do I see the almost total loss in connection? Both nntp and http, it's easy enough to see if browsing will work because at the same time the newsreader is running at 0 the websites also timeout.

Kip, my line is on and off. Was getting high ping of around 350ms to cape town. It gets better then worse. Right nw it's painfully slow. Any news?

I have refreshed your account for you on our servers as a test.
Could you please power down the router for about 5mins then test your speeds again.

@sydCPT - Please let me know if you still having problems. Please PM me your details and I'll look into your account for you.

Better now, instead of completely dying it goes down to 0-3KBps, mostly 0.
Websites still timeout and reset in the browser most of the time though.

Rambo, it looks more like a problem with your exchange from the tracert you posted. The problem lies between your router and the exchange, hence the huge jump at hop no2.
