MWEB Uncapped hosting launch produces surprising results

This article doesn't make sense. The data is not represented well and according to the forum seems very dodgy.

I suspect another reason is the inferior support offered by MWEB hosting.

I submitted my application form and all documentation on the Friday, 17th March (long weekend too), so I knew I'd have to probably wait till mid following week. I followed up on 23rd March with @MWEBGuy on Twitter on who to be fair, was quick to reply and forward the message to my sales rep. I received a call later that day from my rep who told me I'd have to wait it out, as the application had been sent through to their hosting/domain department and sales could no longer assist. I gave it another 2 days and then contacted @MWEBGuy again, who was unfortunately only able to get my sales rep to contact me (and couldn't do anything) rather than the hosting department.

I eventually sent my rep an e-mail on the 29th March (2 weeks since signing up) asking them to cancel my application, and I am yet to even receive a reply to that. If MWEB would like to investigate why this took so long and why I received such piss poor service, I'm happy to forward all e-mails, reference numbers and relevant info to QA.
+1

I applied and it did take them two weeks to get me up and running....

wait. i am still not up and running because for some reason when i try to load a php page all i get is a download dialog box in firefox as if apache was restarted or no php is installed...

waiting to here from their tech support.

Hi zamrg,

Please inbox me your contact details and I'll arrange for a manager to contact you.

Kind regards

After 3 calls & 2 emails (one sent from their online form and one directly to their sale department), I decided to call their sales team to get the answers to these questions.

Q. Where's the shared-hosting hosted?
A. Cape Town server centre (Parow)

Q. Will the price remain @ R19pm
A. For the 1st year (she repeated herself)

Q. What will it be after that?
A. We haven't been informed. :wtf:

Q. Is it a contract?
A. No, its free for the first year :wtf:

Q. How long does it take to setup?
A. 72 hours.

Huh, like wtf? Totally confused here! So ..if I'm a new customer, I'm won't be bound to any contract but I will be screwed when they decide to alter the price after 1 year since I'm "domain locked" (its an effort to change your domain you know ) and with this service??

After reading this specially the part that says

"Anybody can benefit from Uncapped Hosting, but MWEB ADSL (excluding 1 Gig R29 ADSL) customers enjoy the added advantage of free Uncapped Hosting for one year.",

and

"Free for first 12 months (excl. 1 Gig ADSL). Subject to Acceptable Use Policy.
Prices include VAT. Visit www.mweb.co.za for full terms and conditions that always apply. E&OE"

I could only but be confused with their offering.

Think I'll stay @ RSAWEB ....less confusion!

Hi The R,

Please inbox me your contact details and I'll arrange for a manager to contact you.

Kind regards

MWEB Guy

ouch, I'd move all sensitive scripts outside the webroot or alternatively, add a .htaccess rule to temporarily prevent any php files from being loaded. It sounds like they haven't compiled PHP into their Apache or are missing a handler for php files.

Moving an existing domain over - More fineprint

I am an uncapped mweb subscriber and filled in their "call me back form" last week for application to uncapped hosting.
I never received a call.
I called them this week and asked about moving my existing website and domamin to their hosting.
I was told that the Free year AND/OR R19 per month only applies to NEW websites.
I was also told that Mweb can take over the hosting of my existing (Very plain html) website but will cost me R79 per month. (What happened to the R19 per month??)
So by their logic: I can get free hosting on a new website if I make a new one up, but I can't move my existing one to mweb without paying much more than I currently do.
With this strategy Mweb will not be winning over many existing websites.

Sadly this article and its graphs are flawed as Webhosting.Info does not include stats for CO.ZA , which is hardly surprising with the archaic registry service Uniforum provides.

I also requested more info a while back when they brought out the hosting server for R600 (or something to that effect). The last time I even got a ref and was promised a call back. Months later I am yet to hear from anyone at MWeb regarding more info on the hosting package.

I can't see myself moving my 80 odd domains to MWeb and when something goes wrong there is no one to talk to. At least with Hetzner I send them a mail and it will get sorted in no time flat.

People who still thinks that emailing a South African company and getting a swift response should go without the service. Pick up the @$%^ phone. Its faster and you get what you want immediately.

....but without an 'e-trail'. Phones dont always get you what you want. Often you just get people taking down details and promising to call you back. At least with email you have something you can refer back to.

I say do both.

Id just like to point out that many of these cheap hosts might not suit your needs , many of them give you "optional extras" that you have to pay for.
Go read mweb's T&C , they dont back anything up , they delete your mail , they dont guarantee uptime. Not the place I'd want to host my site.
Take a look at the offerings here , I would think the cheapest SA Hosting packages around . and we include everything from databases to PHP and Front Page Extensions.
The cheapest offering at R40 gives you 50mb space , 1 gig bandwidth , 3 mailboxes , 1 database and everything you need , we don't disable any services to squeeze money out of anyone.
In the end , you get what you pay for.

Punctuation, punctuation, punctuation...
who do you use as your upstream provider?
