Would like to know what Mweb's Policy is on gaming ports? Had to swap to webafrica last night due to heavy lagging on Battlefield bad company 2. I know the server is intl but i normally get 200-300ms ping which is barely playable.

If a Mweb rep could just confirm if the PS3 and Xbox ports are shaped or not?
thanks!

Can't wait for local servers!!!

Drukkie why don't you get the game for pc dude?

You can game locally then. Well if you have a decent pc i guess.

200-300ms international is not a bad ping, especially if its the states. You would have to go local to improve but I did hear that they were opening a XBOX shop local? So maybe they'll host some servers.

Are you on Internet Addict ?

Here is an extract from the product info on their Internet Addict package :

Mweb Internet Addict Package said:
  • Unshaped ADSL Bandwidth – Optimal internet access with all your internet activity
  • Ideal for Gaming, VoIP Applications and Large Downloads
  • Enjoy Improved contention ratios
  • Experience faster uploads and downloads than the normal (Shaped) ADSL service
  • No delay in traffic downloads, perfect for online trading and Peer to Peer Applications
  • Pay a fixed monthly price
  • No contracts
  • Use as much data as you like

With the Mweb uncapped you might also lagg in local games. I rarely lagg in local games on my Mweb uncapped 384kbps account. If I do lagg, then I simply switch to my IS Local only 10GB account.

R2400 for the 4 MB line ....no ways...then i rather pay my 60 bucks for unshaped prepaid lol
Don't know why they shape gaming bandwidth????? i mean 100-200MB/h max?

as for the pc thing...was a pc gamer for long time...but nothing beats my sofa and 42 inch....surround sound etc...
no upgrades and everything just works.

Roux, it won't mater either way per account at a certain level. The sheer distance involved means he is going to have a higher ping if he plays on international servers. From my experiance, even with my old express+ which wasn't shaped , 180-300ms is par for international servers in Europe and 250-400ms for the states. The only why this can improve is if they make the actual technology transmitting the data faster.

But yes, Drukkie the ports are shaped , however game data is normally small packets although a lot of them so the shaper will most likely let it through easier than P2P and downloads. I personally would like to see MWeb offer a gamining add on to shaped accounts where you pay maybe R50-R100 and get unshaped to the normal game server ports and IP's like SAIX, EA , IS etc. Surely it can't be that hard to implement.

The simple reason is there is more contention on the normal uncapped package than on Internet Addtice.
If gaming is your thing then you really don't need more than a nice 1GB unshaped account.

damn! so your saying that even if they make it unshaped it wouldn't matter...?

What I am saying is that if you want uncapped bandwidth for plenty of downloads, unshaped traffic for plenty of gaming and low contention ratios to ensure the first two requirements are not negatively impacted - then you need Internet Addict.

However, if you just want uncapped bandwidth at the lowest price for plenty of downloads then the regular uncapped account will do.

The latency will never go below 200ms due to the distance to the international destinations. You cannot transmit faster than the speed of light...

No probs know that...what i meant in my 1st post is that even though 200-300ms is barely playable, it was worse than that last night 600-700ms.
it's cool, thanks guys will just stick to my prepaid saix account for gaming....not paying that much for the internet addict...not worth it...

As much as I am an Mweb fan I have to agree with you on that!
For low latency I would also use an unshapped SAIX account rather that going with Mweb's Internet Addict.

On PC I get 70 - 90 and @ max 150 ms ping .... with a MWEb 4096 uncapped package

Just get the game on PC so you can play locally.

OFF TOPIC:

I find it strange that mweb shape the gaming ports as gaming uses very little bandwidth.

I think they do it because they cant differentiate between gaming traffic and p2p traffic.
This is because most games use a variety of different ports making it more difficult to filter between games and p2p.

While that is true, it would not be difficult to at least get the ips of the local game servers as well as the EA sign in servers. Then it can't be abused.

might be! when playing mw2 it's actually the player overseas that is hosting the game....dammit!!!!!!!!
