MWEB's Free Wifi Router

My new modem has been running fine for a few days, but I only gradually noticed some other (inactive) connections with their device names (shown as bridged onto ethport1). These are definitely the FON public wi-fi hot-spot, since I have no wi-fi devices, and in fact my private wi-fi is turned off (the modem supports dual channel public & private hot-spots).

The modem also shows cumulative traffic DSL traffic being about 20% more than my own internet traffic, which obviosly reflects the public/private split that MWeb mentioned on the Uncapped ADSL line.

P.S. It feels slightly voyeuristic to see who has tried to log-on using my hot-spot...

To understand how the FON wifi network works - am I correct in assuming that once I connect our iPads and iPhones to the new FON router, establish our mweb credentials etc, my daughter who is constantly purchasing extra data on my Vodacom contract (she's on a top up contract - limited monthly amount) will be able to use the FON wifi wherever its available. For example: Canal Walk.

I've just ordered the new router and extender as our current modem seems to be playing-up with constant dropping of wifi signals in the home and previous "normal" wifi connectivity is becoming haphazard. Not sure if its due to the recent Telkom upgrade of their network or the modem is dying of old-age.

Any views will be welcome.

Morning, that is correct.

She will be able to access the MWEB wifi hots spots and FON hotspots using your MWEB account credentials.
 
Guys, I am having trouble getting the Extender to work. I first plugged it in waited a minute and then pressed the WPS button on the extender and then on the router for about 3 seconds each. I can see the WPS light flickering on the extender but when I press the WPS button on the router nothing happens and I could have sworn that it flashed orange when I connected my PC and laptop to the network. The router and extender doesn't pair.

I then tried to configure the extender manually by plugging it into my home PC with a Ethernet cable while plugged into a wall socket. I then tried to connect to the extender via 192.168.2.1 but the page wont load. Am I doing this correctly? Help!
 
Does FON work as one large wireless hotspot? If, hypothetically speaking, an entire street has hotspots available, can I connect at one end of the street and walk to the other end with an uninterrupted connection? Or would I have to connect to each hotspot as I go?

Afternoon, did you change the SSID before trying to sync the extender to the router?

Good Day Oj0, you may have to connect to the next hotspot when you are out of range of the first one you've connected to.

I had the same issue. They cleverly changed the default IP of the extender.

Use 192.168.2.2 with username admin and password 1234 that's the only way I could get it to work.

Still to be honest it does work that great and mine makes a high pitched sound when it is on. Gone back to my old extender.

I have question regarding my MWEB FON enabled router and my existing router. Would it be possible to configure my existing router to extend the wifi signal of the FON router?
Problem I am having is the FON router is not that WiFi signal does not reach my lounge which is approximately 25m away from where the router is. My previous router has a 9db antenna which was strong enough to broadcast throughout the house.

Your assistance is appreciated.

We have not tested this as yet.

So I am not able to give you a definitive answer.
