MWEB's Free Wifi Router

I only came across this today http://www.mweb.co.za/MwebWifi/FreeRouter.aspx

I requested a free router since I am a customer but did not receive any confirmation, email, tracking number nothing so I'm not too sure if I will get mine. Has anyone else received one?

The device can take up to 10 working days to be delivered.

Send me a private message with your MWEB details and I will check up on this for you

I ordered mine last week Thursday, and was delivered by the courier company on Monday afternoon at 16:00. Thumbs up to MWEB for this!

I ordered mine on Monday 20th Jan and received the following Monday (27th). I think it depends where you are. Main city districts are quicker than others.

Hope you've received yours by now, otherwise I'd suggest you take it further.

WOW MWEB I am actually amazed at how quick this application to delivery was. MOnday afternoon between 2-5pm I placed the order. Wednesday 8am new router in hand. Amazing. Good going chaps.

Only thing: my delivery did not include the range extender...? Feedback Please :)

Is anyone else missing the range extender in the box for the delivered items?

I informed MWEB about this, but haven't had any communication about a solution since then. Last week some time.

Yes, they are out of stock, and you will get it in a few weeks.

I received this note inside the box.

I also did not get a range extender with mine.. but that does not worry me too much as I have no use for a range extender as my house does not have any wi-fi dark spots.

I am very impressed with my router. I like the nas function. My media player does not pick up the media server, but it does pick up the samba server, so again no issue.

The wi-fi speeds are good.

It handles traffic well, I have 2 pcs, one laptop, two ipads, two smart phones, a media player, a blu-ray player and my Wii connecting it and the speeds are good.

Thanks Mweb..

I had lots of problems initially, mainly due to Mweb's inability to diagnose issues. Basically, when the router was plugged in, certain sites worked (twitter, google, etc.) while others (news24, mybb) redirected either to an Mweb error page or a landing page stating the router was still being provisioned.

Eventually turns out that 'Telkom does not pass my phone number on to Mweb' and therefore they were unable to provide the router with my Mweb account details. Once this was done manually it worked.

So for me, the process was definitely not plug and play. Also, the extender seems a bit iffy on WPS. I plug it in where I want it to be, access it via the ethernet port and a laptop and configure it manually.

Router access: 192.168.1.1 admin/admin
Extender: 192.168.2.1 admin/1234

The WiFi on the Technicolor router seems to be stronger than the Netgear DGN2000 I was using. In terms of range it reaches a little further, but the throughput seems better than my previous setup of the DGN2000 with DGN834 as repeater.

The extender is not very strong. I currently use it to feed my Mede8er 600X via ethernet (since this model won't recognise the wifi dongle that used to work with a previous mede8er model).

EDIT: Just read the letter now...will await the feedback from MWEB

With my previous Netgear router I had a constant 300MB wifi speed but with the FON router my wifispeed is sitting at 144MB. I have changed the channel of my wifi from 6 to 9 to see if interference is causing this but I had no luck. Any one have any ideas?

Loving the FON router and better still is access at wifi hot spots... one question to MWEB GUY.. when I look at my console I can see a bunch of connections from other users not active but that have connected, is that to the FON portion or my private Wifi ?

Just received my FON router.

It appears from the "automatic setup procedure" that it will pick up the MWEB settings and connect automatically.

A dumb Q.....

Is it set up to operate on MWEB service only?

I have Afrihost as a backup and would like to add it obviously.

Still looking for a manual to download to try and figure out how to do it.

Is it advisable to do a RESET on the router and set it up manually?

Tried to phone MWEB Helpline but gave up after holding for 15M...
