MXit goes open source

I use their PC Client already... Works fine, dont understand why they want to give someone R100 000 for something they already have, or am I missing something?

Easy. Its resource hungry and crashes when you don't feed the baby with enough RAM. No jokes. The client alone took around 50meg RAM and each window it opened to chat was around the same.

Unstable to **** on some PC's

There is now a MXit plugin for Pidgin. Plus they released its source code too. You can download it from http://devzone.mxit.com/libPurple/. It works for Windows and Linux! :-)

:D

Just want to mention the MXit Pidgin plugin is now up to version 2.1. I see new features include clickable links (same as on the phone) and ability to register on MXit from the PC.

Go here to grab it:

That old PC client has been canned.

Is it written in Java by any chance :p

I think it was done mostly in Flash. Fortunately part of the history books now.

Is this thing really open? From the Terms and Conditions:

You grant MXit a free, global, non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty free, transferrable licence to any Developer MXit Applications, including the right to use your MXit Developer Applications for commercial purposes and to grant sub-licenses.

WTF?!

So in other words: "You do all the work and we can then make all the money".

I'm seriously reconsidering creating a MXit app now...
