MXit goes open source

If this is no 01/04 joke then maybe now we'll get to see a stable linux client

What's the point? There are already great IM clients out there such as Pidgin. Why can't they just use standard protocols? That is why I'll always use GTalk and not stupid mxit.

They now have an official plugin for Pidgin, which is better than my plugin on launchpad in a few ways, except for the annoying popup ads they have.

When you download the code, it is marked as open source. The problem is that to be able to download it, you have to agree to terms and conditions specifying that you may not redistribute it at all, which contradicts the GPL they're using.

At least they're moving in the right direction, and I'm hoping they clear up their terms and conditions.

i think they have tried and failed at developing their own pc client and now coming up with the 'innovation' idea as a cover

keyword: FAIL

I use their PC Client already... Works fine, dont understand why they want to give someone R100 000 for something they already have, or am I missing something?

If they go open source, can someone inject some kind of source code into the client that kills ppl who use MXit speak?

Please?

Stopped using mxit years ago when they couldn't sort out the interface with MSN. When i got my first S60v2 phone I switched to IM+ - a wonderful piece of software...

You work on the launchpad pidgin plugin?
Great job!
Official one plugin for pidgin sounds promising except for the popups, I hate spammy popups....
So I will probably stay clear of the official one while it has popups all over the place....

What does this has to do with open source if anything?

The title "Mxit goes open source" is misleading. I don't see any reference to the client being open source.

Here's the link to the competition.

Not such a big turn out considering how big the prize it....

Not really, open source projects do have source control so you can see exactly who made what changes where. And people do check these things before they release another build, surely linux would have hundreds of back doors if this was the case...

Anyway from what I'm seeing and the T&C of the competition it's the protocol that's opened up, not the client....

Thats cos all the real programmers have emmigrated :D

The truth is that the programmers out there nowadays are so used to frameworks and the easy way out. I just dont see any programmer writing applications using Win32 API or even the Visual C++. Everyone is using Java and .Net

I have strongly suspected that Mxit has been lacking in the skills department hence they are struggling develop a PC client. I commented on this last week http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=2663246&postcount=34

maybe they are reading the forums here :D

Its good to see that Mxit have finally released their protocol and made it open source. Well done guys this will surely make Mxit grow from strength to strength and boost market penetration. WELL DONE GUYS :cool::)

There is now a MXit plugin for Pidgin. Plus they released its source code too. You can download it from http://devzone.mxit.com/libPurple/. It works for Windows and Linux! :-)
