Hey! Mxit was awesome in it's day.

It was only awesome because it was cheaper than sending smses. The app itself was always pretty crap, and it got much worse when they made the jump to smartphones. I think Mxit could have been big if it had a CEO worth a damn back in the day. The need for a total redesign was desperate long before they started haemorrhaging users. With a better interface and more reliable back-end they could have expanded to first world countries.

I wonder how Mxit is comparing to WeChat in the South African market. Similar product.

WeChat has a bigger base on smartphones, but support is declining as WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger grab the market.

Mxit is big on feature phones so is declining as people upgrade.

Was on mxit when it started up. Was great to chat with friends without having to worry about sky-high cellphone bills.

Migrated eventually over to gtalk, whatsapp and telegram.

You could chat to people on Mxit from Google Talk back in day the provided your phone supported Google Talk.
